Windows, Window Box Garden and Brick

I want to let you know how much I appreciate all your thoughts and notes about my lost Toby.  So far we have not found him but I haven’t given up hope.

I know that you would not normally see windows right up against a brick wall but I love how this turned out.  I recently got the Tim Holtz brick embossing folder and love the rustic look.  I couldn’t resist pairing the brick with windows and window boxes filled with foliage and flowers.

I embossed a piece of vanilla cardstock and then ran my Fired Brick ink pad directly across the top of the high parts of the embossing.  This created a really rick dark red brick color.  I then used a sponge and applied Vintage Photo to the grout and open areas. I did this to make the brick look more rustic but also to cover where some of the red ink got on those spaces.

I cut two windows and then cut the inner side of each of them off so I could fit them together to create a double window. I did the same with the two window boxes and then mounted it all on the brick background.

I didn’t get a great cut to match the two windows together so I added the tall flourish to draw the eye away from the upper gap in the seam.  It sort of looks like jack in the bean stock doesn’t it? LOL! I die cut and punched four different kinds of foliage to fill the window boxes.  I wanted them to be more about foliage with just little hints of flowers.  I used red to match the brick for the flowers so they would be seen but would blend in well. I used two different shades of cardstock for the foliage to add contrast. Click on the photos if you would like a little closer view.

The foliage reminds me of the large dish gardens my mother used to make in the flower shop.  She always put a little bit of everything in them.

Have a great Sunday.  I will keep you posted about my lost Toby.  Thanks again for all your warm support.  It means so much to me.

  3. Kittie, I love this card, so lovely, we think alike, I did this just the other day, wanting to re create the bay window I grew up with as a kid, but alas I did not get mine finished, now I hopefully will after seeing yours.
I just love that rustic look, the greenery all looks terrific. And the tiny flowers are a perfect touch.
    Thanks for sharing

I am saying many prayers that your Toby finds his or her way home, I would be frantic if my Mirage were lost, She is my constant companion, I can well imagine how frantic you are. One consolation I have with her, is she is micro chipped, usually the first thing a vet will do is scan a dog or cat to see if they are chipped and thus find their owner right a way.
I don’t know what you do in your area, but here we not only contact the obvious, paper and radio and local township and dog patrol, but also local Veterinarians and pet grooming salons. And we always put up signs in all these places as well, for sometimes a month or two, had one person find their cat after 6 months.
I was a dog and cat groomer for over 30 years, and we were always getting phone calls from people with lost pets, and I know when ever I pick up strays (all the time), the first thing I do is take it to the vet before bringing it into my home until I can find the owner.
Well, not matter what, good luck, hope all turns out well!!
    Hugs

  4. Kittie, I’m new to your site. I love it. I am so sorry to hear abt Toby. I Know that God hears our prayers abt our lost pets. I lost a dog of mine,in the late 70’s, out in the desert, near Bishop CA., (i thought she,Lady, was in the back seat with our infant son. My hsb wanted me to drive and I got out of the passenger side and went around the back and he got out of the car and went around the front.) We know now that “Lady” followed me and I never saw her. She was a little dog. I can’t imagine what see thought when we drove away. I realized she wasn’t in the car abt 250 miles later. I was in a horrible state. WE went back and walked all up and down the hwy (where we thought we had changed drivers)calling her namefor over 2 hrs. NO LUCK.I was sick with grief. We lived in Bakersfield, CA and we were driving back from Bishop,CA. I cried and cried and put ads in every paper and everywhere I could think of. NO replys. Then we got transfered to Arkansas.I thought I’d never see her again. We are originally from Colorado, my hsb got her for me at the Dumb Friends League. I always kept those tags on her. I went back to CO on vac. and just happened to call the Dumb F.L.(this was abt a yr later)the woman I talked to (and she wasn’t there often, she was a volunteer)said she remembered getting a call from some lady in NEVADA that had found a little dog in the desert out of Bishop,CA. but she couldn’t find the info that the lady left. She finally found it. I called the people that found my ‘Lady’. They said she was just sitting by the side of the hwy looking like she was waiting for someone. The both of us figured out she was in the desert for 2 days and nights. When they turned around to go get her she ran into the desert, but they finally caught her. They loved her and didn’t want to give her back, but after talking abt what happened they did.Our friends from Bakerfield,CA went to Nevada to get her and then she flew home to CO. and we took her back to ARK. She lived for many yrs and then the Lord just took her home. THIS WAS A MIRACLE and they do happen. We have two kitties now and we never let them out. They are our babies, since we’re empty nesters, now. I will pray for your Toby and also ask the Lord to give you Comfort and Strength. Please keep us informed. Blessings, Victoria ps. I love your Kitty widget and have played with him/her. it is so cute!

  8. Don’t give up hope about Toby, one of our indoor cats years ago was missing for over two weeks, We had given up hope of ever seeing him again. Every night I left the outside light on and food on the doorstep. (I think I made the racoons very happy)!
Anyway, one day two weeks or more after he disappeared, I looked out the window, and saw him under the trees at the end of the yard. He was really scared, and it took us a few days to get him. (Lobster worked)!
Our most recent cat, never left the yard, but was so scared he stayed hidden under bushes and trees and it took a couple of days to find him and catch him. That day, my husband and I managed to corner him.
Indoor cats seem to get really freaked out when outdoors for the first time. Keep listening for him crying, (That’s how we found the recent cat), and leave food and water out, even if you are just feeding the wildlife. I’m prayng for your Toby’s safe return.

  9. I love this card, of course I love all of your cards! This brick background is fantastic and I know you will have lots of fun with it.
I did not know about your Toby.Cat or Dog? I am new to comments section. I had a cat once who ran away while we were moving across town. I rode around for weeks calling his name out the car window and VOILA one day there he was and she ran to me and jumped into the car. We had several more wonderful years together before she passed away, so never give up.

  16. Kittie, I love the window against the brick. It reminds me of old brick walls that are reclaimed inside renovated old buildings that have been turned into resturants, apt lofts etc… and they hang lots of things on them.
So sorry to hear about Toby, I hope he makes it home soon.

  19. Great card; the window/window boxes look great against the brick wall. Sorry about Toby; hopefully, you will get good news soon. I made my first attempts at a “Winter Moonlight Snow Scene” today-inspired by your tutorial. Came out pretty good, if I do say so myself.

  20. that red brick looks so real, and the colors your chose were terrific for that effect. Love the idea of the double window and flower box. Who knows that it may have once been a window before the bricks. Keeps you guessing. Just love the idea. thanks for sharing.
