How to Make a Hydrangea

My project today shows how to make a hydrangea flower and to create a pretty arrangement with ivy and branches filled with small flowers.  For this project I used the Rubbernecker Small Flowers #3, Large Ivy, Berries Branches, Stacked Butterflies, Nested Marquee 2 w/Stitch, Nested Rectangle Small Stitch and Branch Shadow background stamp.

Come on over to my blog to see my step by step tutorial on how to make a hydrangea using flower dies made by Rubbernecker.

The Tag and Card Base

  • Cut a piece of cream cardstock approximately 4.25″ x 3.50″ and use a blender brush to apply Old Paper ink to cover the piece.
  • Secure the cardstock and Branch Shadow stamp in the MISTI and use Juniper ink to stamp the image.
  • Cut the piece of cardstock using a rectangle die.
  • Create the decorative tag top:
    • Insert the top of the rectangle inside of the Marquee die leaving the bottom section on the outside of the die.
    • Line up the Marquee die so the center top point is in the center of the rectangle.
    • Run the die and cardstock through the machine just far enough in to cut out the Marquee shape on the top.
  • Note:  The stitch pattern on the Marquee and Nested Rectangle dies match perfectly.  The tag looks like it was cut from one full tag die.
  • Cut a rectangle layer using the second largest die and attach it to the card base using strips of mounting tape.
  • Apply strips of mounting tape to the back of the tag and attach it to the card base.

The Hydrangea

  • Cut several sections of the Small Flowers and form them using a small tipped stylus and molding pad.
  • Color the center of all the flowers using a green marker.
  • Punch out 4 circles:  1.75″, 1.25″, 1.00″ and .75″ using cream cardstock and attach the layers together using mounting tape.

Hydrangea 5

Hydrangea 14

  • Begin attaching the flowers to the top center using glossy accents and work your way around each layer to create the full flower.  Note: Reverse action tweezers are my tool of choice to pick up and place the flowers and then I use the tip to secure them in place
  • Note:  These two step pictures are from my Hydrangea Tutorial if you would like to see the full step by step instructions.

Create the Hydrangea Arrangement

  • Cut the berry and ivy branches using green cardstock.
  • Attach the smaller flowers to the branches to create a full floral branches.
  • Secure the ivy branches in place at the top left section of the tag using glossy accents.
  • Attach the flower branches over top of the ivy and attach using glossy accents.
  • Apply a large piece of mounting tape to the back of the hydrangea and attach it to the corner to cover the ends of all the branches.
  • Cut a cream colored butterfly and attach it to an ivy branch using glossy accents and apply three small pearls to finish.

I hope you have enjoyed seeing how to make a hydrangea.  It really is easy and yet it makes such a beautiful focal image on a card front. I think the addition of the flower branches and ivy softens up the arrangement and creates an old-fashioned garden feel. Would you like to see a video done of how I made the hydrangea?  Would you like to see a video of how I made this tag using two different dies? I’d love to hear from you.  And, you can find tons of hydrangea card inspiration on Pinterest. Thanks for coming by and I hope you have a great Sunday.  Stay home and stay safe and sound.
