Let’s Rustle Up Some Fun

This project is for the the Rubbernecker Blogger Challenge RBC06 using the color combination of pink, red, and grey. Whew!  Not an easy combo for me!  I decided Kelley, one of the Rubbernecker Little Lovin’s Kids  would be perfect. She looks like she has just performed at the rodeo and has taken first prize.  Her clothing is not your normal cowgirl colors, with red tassels on her shirt and gloves and sparkles on her shoulders and hat.  She has a silver belt buckle and a silver handled bullwhip to complete her show biz outfit.

I stamped Kelley on watercolor paper with Brilliance black and heat set. I watercolored her with pink, red, grey, brown and blush blossom for her skin. I used a pink marker to go over her shirt to add depth and it turned into more of a salmon color. Doh!  Well salmon is a pink so I still can use this for the challenge. I added sparkle to her shirt shoulder, the stars on her boots and gloves and the hat band with a Gelly Roll Stardust pen. I stamped the buckle part of the image a second time and embossed with silver embossing powder.  I cut Kelley out and set her aside to create her background.

I used two different pieces of designer paper from a Provo Craft Holiday Slab to make a bright and cheerful background and complete with a grey fence cut with deckle scissors. I used a red marker to color the smaller words enclosed in the rope portion of the sentiment and stamped so I could cut it in an oval shape. I stamped the rope portion of the word "Fun" and cut out to pop over the oval. I loved the tassels on Kelley’s clothing and thought a red oval layer cut in tassels all the around would be fun under the sentiment. It made the sentiment look like a winning ribbon for her performance so I added a bit of salmon twill to complete that look. The card was lacking to me so I decided to carry the salmon one step further by creating a little braided bullwhip with a silver handle for her to hold in her hand. I popped Kelley up on mounting tape and then adhered the whip by using Mod Podge.  This was a fun project, although a little strange in colors for me but it’s always good to stretch ourselves.

Bullwhip: cut three very thin strips of cardstock and run over your bone folder on both sides to soften your paper. Attach the strips to your work counter with a piece of tape and slowly work the strips into a braid until you have a length long enough for your project. Take an additional strip of cardstock and dip into Mod Podge to wrap around the bottom of your braid.  Hold tightly until dry enough to hold on it’s own. Use a larger strip of cardstock to create the handle portion of the whip and attached tightly around the top portion of the whip with Mod Podge.  This is a simple little technique that add lots of fun to your project.  It really looks great on rustic western projects when you use brown cardstock that has been sponged with a brown distress ink and looks like real leather.
