Pencil Shading and a Big Red Valentine Flower

Notice:  Rubbernecker is holding a Design Team Call.  If you are interested please click here for  details.

I have two projects to share with you today.  I tried my hand at pencil shading the truck from my Kittie Kits Fall Harvest set. The second is a fairly gaudy red and white Valentine flower card.

Linda aka Holstein was featured artist for the Splitcoaststampers Featured Stamper challenge this week. I was intrigued by her pencil shaded horse card and inspired to try my hand with the technique.

I stamped the image with black Stazon and used a used a sketching pencil with soft lead to shade the truck image. I really had fun playing with this technique and definitely think I will try again.

I almost tried to light pencil sketch in some scenery around the truck but thought I’d better stop where I was.

My second card is a crazy one for me. It is one of those times where the project looked so much better in my head than how it really turned out.

I wanted to try making a flower with my new Stampin’ Up! blossom punch but got a little carried away with the size of the flower. I punched several petals, distressed them and then attached them to a punched circle used as the base of the flower.

I wanted to center to be sparkly with rhinestones but wanted them to be red so I colored clear ones with a red Promarker.  I attached the leafy flourish to try and soften the flower a little.  I was almost not going to post this as it isn’t my favorite but thought I may as well share the bad with the good.  LOL!

  1. You must have an art background, Kittie … it seems that there is very little you can’t do with colouring mediums and you are so creative with design ideas. Love this truck and it’s something I would not even have considered doing with a sketching pencil…it’s certainly the perfect image to do this technique with.
And the flower card is not what I would consider ‘gaudy’. Red can be very ‘in-your-face’ but with the white that you have used, I honestly think that the flower and the card are beautiful.

  2. Kittie, you have NEVER made a bad card in your life! I really like both cards a lot and your pencil shading is fantastic….I also like the blossom … it isn’t crazy at all.

  3. Boy, you’re an artist too! Absolutely loved what you did with your shading. Congrats! And the red flower was gaudy – it was beautiful. I might try that one today!

  4. Hi Kittie!
Wonderful pencil shading on this truck !! Love the brick wall background – perfect for this!
Have one question – usually soft pencil will smudge if you are not using a ‘fixative’ of some sort – did you spray this with anything? One trick I used to use (mostly with pastels) was give it a quick spray with a cheap aerosol hairspray – the liquid ones could make it ‘run’!

  5. You have to be an artist to do what you did with that truck. You have such an eye for detail. I know you think the other card is not good but even what you think is not good is better than what I can do. Once again, thanks.

  6. Terrific change of pace Kittie, the pencil shading came out very nice, I really like it, very different from your usual techniques, but we all have to expand at times, I think I iwll give this a try as well. Love trying new things! And your second card is very pretty, very nice flower, and I think the over all look is pretty.
    Thanks for sharing,
    hugs

  7. Hi Kittie
    What a perfect mans card!
Your shading is spot on. I love all your cards, but I thought the big red flower may have overpowered a bit. I would love, love, love to see you do the same red & white card with some small red posies and a sprig of greenery mixed with the same white scroll embellie. Your flowers always amaze me!!
