Susan’s Birdhouse and Dogwood

Good Sunday morning and Happy Mother's Day!  I have a fun project to share with you today made using Susan Tierney Cockburn’s Birdhouse and Dogwood along with some step by step photos showing how I assembled and painted the birdhouse.

I cut all the pieces for the birdhouse.  I attached the two house sections together by adhering cut strips to the inside to secure them in place.

1

I cut an additional section of house, cut it in half and applied ATG adhesive,

2

I attached one side of the house to the center of the support piece.

3

I attached the other side of the house to the support piece to complete the closure.

4

For a test I painted a scrap strip of cardstock with antique linen crackle paint and allowed it to dry.  I have to admit that I am so impatient that I heat dried it with my heat gun. The antique linen paint was the only color I had so I decided to try my hand at coloring it with Copic markers.  I know….don’t laugh! I wanted my house to look like real wood.  My test worked pretty good so I decided to try it out on the whole house.

I painted the house with crackle paint and allowed it to dry(with the help of my heat gun).  LOL!

5

I colored the house with a medium brown marker.

6

I wasn’t totally satisfied so I colored again with a darker brown.

7

I attached the roof sections together with the same kind of support pieces that I used on the house.

8

I painted the roof with clear rock candy crackle paint.  I colored over it with a dark red copic marker to add dimension and texture.

9

I created three dogwood and leaves and attached them to a branch cut with the bare branch die.  I used my hot glue gun to attach the roof to the house.

I attached the flowers to the branch and hot glued them to the house. Here’s a closer view.

I love how the birdhouse turned out and will definitely make it again.  Next time I will go for lighter colors.
