All the “hard work” on this Santa Claus card was done with new dies!
I love a cute Santa Claus card and when I got my hands on my actual new dies I couldn’t wait to make this one that I think shows Santa on Christmas Eve doing what he does best! I used three new die sets – Santa with Presents, Santa’s Sleigh and Flying Reindeer – from my new collection of Kittiekraft by Rubbernecker that was just recently released. They are going FAST so if you like this card or know how you want to use any of these, get on over there. There’s nothing worse than having to sit on a cute idea!
The Card Base and Frame
- Use white cardstock to cut an A2 sized card base.
- Use mint tape to mask off the borders of the card base and apply a soft cloudy sky using light blue ink, cloud stencil and large blender brush.
- Cut a red scallop layer, place it back on the cutting platform, line up a rectangle die, secure it with mint tape and cut the frame opening.
- Cut a green frame using the next size smaller rectangle die.
- Apply ATG adhesive all the way around the back of the red frame, line it up over the green matting frame and attach them together.
- Apply strips of mounting tape all the way around the back of the frame.
- Cut one section of snow layer using white cardstock and a deckle hills die, trim it to size and attach it to the back of the frame.
- Attach the frame to the card base. Note: I applied strips of double stick tape to the back edges of the snow layer to secure it to the base since it covered up the sticky mounting tape.
The Evergreen Trees
- Use green cardstock to cut the evergreen trees.
- Run each tree through a straight crimper to add texture and dimension.
- Apply pieces of mounting tape to the back of each tree, tuck them in behind the snow layer and attach to the card base.
Santa and Sleigh
- Use red, white , black and gold metallic cardstock to cut the Santa pieces.
- Assemble all the pieces and attach them together using glossy accents. Note: I used black cardstock and gold cardstock for Santa’s belt but it’s mostly covered up with the sleigh.
- Use red, white, gold and green cardstock to cut the presents and Santa’s bag.
- Assemble and attach the pieces together and attach them using glossy accents.
- Cut two red sleigh sections, two gold runners and one gold sleigh trim.
- Apply rolled up double stick tape to the back of the gold trim and attach it to the top border of the sleigh.
- Use glossy accents to attach the gold runners to both sleigh sections.
- Use glossy accents and tiny pop dots to attach Santa, the presents and Santa’s bag to the back side of the sleigh.
- Apply glossy accents to the back of the presents and Santa’s bag and attach the whole sleigh to the second sleigh. Note: I wanted the sleigh to be dimensional by using two but it really doesn’t show on the card. I could have easily used just one sleigh. You can only see the two by looking at the card from the side. See side view below!
The Reindeer
- Cut the reindeer using white cardstock and the harness using cream and metallic gold cardstock.
- Apply cream ink to the whole body of the reindeer using a mini applicator.
- Use brown ink to apply darker shading to the body using a mini applicator. 1. Pro Tip: I applied the cream colored ink to the whole body to add moisture to the paper so when the brown ink is applied it blends more easily. You can start with with dry cream cardstock but the brown ink doesn’t flow over the paper as well and can get blotchy. 2. Pro Tip: I cannot stress enough how much easier it is to apply and blend inks using the Sofft Mini Applicators because they are such high quality.
- Attach the harness sections and the red Rudolph nose to the reindeer using glossy accents.
Finish The Card
- Cut a length of metallic gold string long enough to double up for the reins.
- Fold the string in half and attach the folded section to the back of the reindeer and attach with glue dots.
- Trim the string ends as necessary to fit and attach to the back of Santa’s hand using glue dots.
- Apply a large piece of mounting tape to the back of the Santa’s sleigh and attach to the card.
- Cut two large pieces of mounting tape, attach them together, attach them to the back of the reindeer and attach him to the card. Pro Tip: I doubled the mounting tape for the reindeer because I wanted him to stand well away from the trees to look like he was really flying.
- Add a bright sparkly yellow star to the scene for the finishing touch.
This card took a bit of time but it was fun and well worth it to me. If you like to make fast and easy cards check out my Santa Claus Christmas Cards -Quick and Easy.
I am getting a little bit of a kick out of this Santa Claus card almost looking like a snapshot someone took of him taking off into the sky, delivering all those presents to the little ones around the world! He’s a busy guy, that Santa!
