Learn how to put together this charming handmade see through window card with so many realistic details!
I love window cards – I’ve made a few! – and when I saw this new Window with Shutters die set from Rubbernecker, I was so delighted by all the fantastic details. The pediment (that beautiful decorative piece above the window), the shutters, the flower box…oh my heart! So of course I sat right down and created this handmade see through window card design that you can change up endlessly for new looks.
In addition to that new die set, I also used Rubbernecker’s Flower Stems, Small Flowers #4, Repeating Bricks Stencil and Welcome Spring 6×6 Paper Pad to build out all the details. Let me take you through the making so I can share some of my tricks to turning this into a realistic scene that makes you want to be invited inside!
Card Base
- Use white cardstock to cut an A2 (5.50″ x 4.25″) sized card base.
- Score down the center of the card base at the 5.50″ with the 11.00″ side along the top of the Scor-Pal.
- Secure the card base and Repeating Bricks Stencil in place with masking tape and shades of Citrus and Pumpkin ink using an ink blending tool.
- Finish the stenciling by randomly applying light touches of Pecan ink to create a more natural looking brick.
See Through Window
To show you specifically how to make the see through window I’ve made one here with no decoration or details so you can focus on the construction. It looks tricky but trust me, once you go follow my steps once, you will see how it all comes together and you will get it down pat in no time.
- Line up the window die in the center of card base. Pro Tip: A centering ruler makes it fast and easy to center dies on a card front.
- Place the card base and die on the cutting platform and cut.
- Place the card base face down on the the work surface.
- Insert the window face down in the opening and secure in place with double stick tape. Pro Tip: I secured the window first with a piece of masking tape to hold it perfectly in place for when I began attaching the double stick tape.
- Turn the card base face up on the work surface.
- Cut a second window.
- Apply thin strips of rolled up double stick tape all the way around the back of the window.
- Line the window up over the original window and attach to the card base. Pro Tip: This step isn’t necessary but I wanted the window to have a more dominate presence with the shutters.
- Cut a piece of designer paper large enough to cover the window opening.
- Apply strips of mounting tape all the way around the layer and attach it to the inside of the card base.
The Darling Shutters and Window Flower Box
- Use white cardstock to cut the shutters, window box and small architectural pieces.
- Apply connect glue to the window box squares and attach them to the box.
- Attach the small decorative pieces to the top crown molding section using connect glue.
- Apply 1/8″ strips of double stick tape to the inner back side of the shutters and thin strips of mounting tape to the outer edges and attach them to the card base. Pro Tip: I wanted the inner side of the shutters to fit flush against the window. Adding mounting tape on the outer edges allows the shutters to stand away from the card base for an additional touch of dimension.
- Apply glossy accents to the crown section and attach it to the card base.
Window Box Flowers
- Use green cardstock to cut several sections of Flower Stems.
- Cut the Small Flowers #4 using yellow cardstock and form them using the molding pad and small tipped stylus.
- Attach the flowers to the green stems using glossy accents.
- Tuck the leaf and flower branches behind the window box and attach using glossy accents.
- Apply a piece of mounting tape to the back of the window box and attach it to the card base.
