Riley the Mean Pirate

The Featured Stampers on SCS today is Stephanie.Hargis and what a gallery full of cute cards she has.  Here is a link to Stephanie’s card that I chose as my inspiration piece. I stayed pretty true to the layout of Stephanie’s card and used similar colors as well.  The biggest change is that I changed up her darling cowboy image for a mean “Riley” pirate image from Hanna Stamps.  I shivered in my boots the whole time I worked on this card as this Riley is a real tough character.  Pirate I put a piece of scotch tape along the very bottom lines of Riley’s foot, peg leg and crutch to cover those lines up, inked the stamp, removed the tape and then stamped Riley on a piece of watercolor paper with Versafine Black ink. Covering the lines on the bottom of an image allows you to add dirt, sand, grass, etc to whatever you are working on and makes the image look more natural. I wanted the images to look buried in the sand. I watercolored him with reinkers and then sponged on the sand dunes, ocean and sky. I used the sea oats image from the Kittie Kits Beach Master to add greenery to the dune line and then filled in the sand area with the small dune image from the set. I added Liquid Applique to the water but it doesn’t really show well as I sponged versa on the water and sand area and embossed with Iridescent Ice embossing powder to add sparkle. I sponged around the outside border of the Riley scene image to create an aged look. I used Diamond Glaze to his hooves and antlers, a black glaze pen to the patch, leather belt, to outline the bird and to the dots on his kerchief. I don’t have a pirate map image of any kind so I did a Google search and found one that I printed off for the background layer. It doesn’t really show well as I waded it up to distress, used my distressing tool on all the edges and sponged on distress ink to age. I used the ink pad directly over the fold lines to make them more prominant. I attached grosgrain to the map layer and adhered it to the card base. I sponged versa directly onto a piece of scrap watercolor paper and embossed with gold embossing powder to create a layer of gold to punch out for coins and punched them with a 3/8 circle punch.  I used Diamond Glaze to adhere the coins to the scene and allowed them to drop onto the map layer as well. My finishing touch was to add one singe knot of grosgrain.  I love Riley even when he is a mean, old pirate.

  1. Well, I am not quite sure he looks all that mean, but your card is adorable all the same! Kittie your little scenes are amazing — I am afraid that if I used all the stamps you could make, my scenes still would not even be close! Great card as always!
