Inspired Watercolor Scene with Dies

Good Sunday morning.  My project today was made for the Splitcoaststampers Inspiration Challenge. The inspiration site was Poketo and I was inspired by a fun softly colored scene on a child’s wallet pictured below.

APAK Wallet 1

I was so taken with the beautiful muted soft colors and the sweet cartoony outdoor scene on the wallet that I just had to try to recreate something like it.

I knew the only way to get such soft colors on my background layer was to watercolor on watercolor paper with reinker mixed with water.  I used both shabby shutters and tumbled glass to get the bluish green sky background.

I wanted everything in my scene to be as muted as the background so that led me to watercolor small pieces of paper in each color that I wanted to use to die cut all of my foliage, flowers, butterflies and bunnies.

This was really a labor of love because it took me quite a bit of time to color each paper and heat dry it.  When I got all of my pieces cut out I knew I had to frame it so that the frame blended right into the scene thus one more large watercolored piece of paper. My whole work area looked like a big rainbow smashed into it. LOL! KC Impression Obsession Bunny Set 6 close

I thought while I was at it I would take a few shots to show the steps I used.

1

I use my distress ink pad  lids for my palette to mix the ink and water.

The first step is to wash your whole piece of watercolor paper with water.  You want it to be very wet so the color will run well and blend.

The second step is to put plenty of reinker in your palette. It will take more ink than you may think to get the color you want to end up with as it will dry much lighter than it looks when wet. If your dry finished piece isn’t as rich in color as you want it just wet it down again and add more color.

2

I used almost pure reinker on this pink to get it as rich as I wanted it to be when it dried.  You can see that I used lots of water to allow the color to move.

3

I heat dried the paper when I was finished.

4

Here are the papers I made for the project.  It is missing the apricot piece I used on my bunnies as that color was an afterthought.

5

If you like water coloring then be sure and treat yourself to good watercolor paper.  It makes all the difference in the world.

  5. Beautiful and so soft and soothing. Thanks for sharing your wonderful talent. One Question, if I may…..what is a good watercolor paper ? I have some, but not sure it is all that good as it looks a little coarse to me and not fine. Thanks for any suggestions ! m
    Blessings
