Birds Fly Over the Rainbow

Good Sunday morning.  My project today was made for the Splitcoaststampers Inspiration Challenge.  The inspiration site this week was Ruth Bleakley's Portfolio on Flickr and I was inspired by her Cloud People Diorama found here.   Here’s what I came up with.

I had made this white Sizzix shadowbox a few weeks ago as a prototype for a tutorial I was going to do for the CLASSROOM.  I thought it would be fun to use it to create a cloud diorama and keep it all white to match the white clouds and allow the sun, birds and rainbow bring in pops of color.  I used the Memory Box Marshmallow Clouds on the inside of the box and cut them down and staggered them to fill the space.  I attached the farthest back cloud to the back wall of the wall with three layers of mounting tape and worked forward attaching each new cloud with the three layers of tape so the clouds would be equal distance from each other.

I used the Impression Obsessions sun from the Sun and Moon set and attached it to the back wall of the box with four layers of mounting tape so it would appear just a little in front of the back cloud and yet not right up against the cloud in front of it.  Did that make sense?  LOL!.

I used my Spellbinders Classic Ovals to create the pastel rainbow.  I cut 1/4” oval strips by using most of the dies in the largest set and graduating down in size.  I attached all the ovals strips to a piece of scrap cardstock to hold the strips together and cut away the edges of scrap paper. I cut the rainbow to fit inside the box and attached it to the inside of the box frame with mounting tape. I originally had a lavender strip but cut it off as it just made the rainbow too large and covered much of the opening.  If I had it to do over I would have used both the large and small dies and created my strips 1/8” wide instead.  I think a smaller thinner rainbow would have worked better for this tiny box.

I attached three different sizes of clouds to the front of the box with mounting tape and added the three flying birds for the finishing touch.  I remember Judy Garland singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow in the Wizard of Oz and the words kept running through my mind.

Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow.  Why then, oh why can't I?

  1. This just proves Kittie that you can make everything look beautiful no matter what the
challenge, but I did miss your usual detailed scenes like the ones you showed below it with the cute bunnies and birdhouse, but I love Rainbows and the Sun, and clouds on a sunny day are good LOL…

  4. This shadow box, art piece, is amazing, WoW!!!!! It is so very pretty, and bright, and cheerful and uplifting. Thank you for sharing this today, thank you for sharing the things you would possibly do differently. I think I would try it with more narrow strips for the rainbow and have more arcs of colour, just my thoughts. I love your interpretation of the song. This art piece is very creatively inspiring and I’m looking at the shadow box differently now.

  5. Love these shadow box projects. This is a pricey die but you are showing so many different ways to use it. I think my girls and I would love to make some of these but all the foam tape layering maybe be a little too much and feel tedious to them. Do you have any other ideas on how the layering might work?

  6. Susan, I have used a good strong L shaped piece of strong cardstock, attached it to the back of an image and then secured it to the floor of the box and that works very well also. That is hw O secured the bunnies in place in the Easter box. I sure hope this helps and makes sense. Feel free to write me again if not.
