“Over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go”. I had so much fun creating this fun wintry holiday scene using the new Essentials by Ellen Over The River Stamp set and the coordinating Over The River Die set. There are so many fun scenic images in the set. There is nothing I like better than making a snow scene with a red truck hauling a Christmas tree home. I created a Christmas village snuggled in between evergreen trees and snow capped mountains in the background.
The Scene Images
-I started by stamping a couple sets of houses on watercolor paper using black Versafine ink and embossed with clear embossing powder. I used Memento markers and watercolor brush to color the houses and I used the same basic colors on the whole community. I hand cut all the houses to eliminate the white borders.
-I die cut several evergreen tree groupings using green cardstock and then stamped the images using green ink. I heat dried the ink on the trees and then lightly sponged the trees using green ink to soften the image and used a brown marker to color the tree trunks. T
-The truck was stamped on red cardstock using the black Versafine ink and embossed with clear embossing powder. I hand cut the truck to eliminate the outline border. I used a craft knife to cut out the window. I cut one of the tree sections to create a single tree and attached in the truck bed using glue dots.
-I die cut several mountains using Kraft cardstock and applied white Nuvo Crystal Drops to fill in the tops to create snow caps. I set the mountains aside to dry.
-I created a falling snow background on a piece of blue cardstock using a white gel pen.
-I hand cut two snow layers using deckle scissors. I used a mini applicator and brown ink to create a road on the front snow layer.
Assembling the Scene
-I cut a red frame, applied double stick tape to the lower portion of the frame and attached the front snow layer. I applied double stick tape to the back of the first snow layer and attached the second snow layer.
-I applied thin strips of mounting tape to the back of the frame and attached it to the blue snow card base.
-I applied pieces of mounting tape to the back of the mountains and tucked them in place behind the snow layer.
-The houses were tucked in behind both snow layers and were attached with small pieces of mounting tape.
-Tree sections were tucked in behind the snow layers to fill in around the houses.
-The pickup truck was attached to the snow layer along with a couple tree sections.
For my project today I used a step by step format instead of a paragraph format. I would love to hear from you if you find this format easier to follow and if you would prefer this for my future projects.
Julie’s Over the River sets are so fun to use. There are so many possibilities to create holiday cards as well as all occasion scene cards. I have linked the sets that I used below along with a link that will direct you to the whole Essentials by Ellen new release. You will definitely want to check them out.

Such a darling card. I can’t wait for winter.
I love making these type of cards but it is difficult for me. This has helped a lot. My only suggestion is pictures of every few steps so I can see the building process. I am a visual person and need to see what I am reading. Thanks for all the joy I have received from your sharing.
Totally love your scene! It looks like a cozy, friendly little town. The format: yes! Love the step by step. Much easier to follow than paragraphs. Hope you keep it! Thanks for sharing your beautiful card!
Your card is so pretty! I love the details you always manage to get right on your creations. I can see why you would hand cut the little houses. It would destroy the illusion if they had white borders. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work!
BTW, love your new blog design. 🙂
