You can use this handmade birdhouse scene card for just about any occasion!

I can’t stay away from all these spring and summer cards – there are so many fun new things from Rubbernecker that I am loving using. Today’s handmade birdhouse scene card is a result of my love of adding birds to my projects and the charming little birdhouses from the Large Bird House die set. There are three different houses in that set and each has its own sweet little style making it possible for you to use this basic birdhouse scene many times over and make entirely different cards.

Let’s jump in together and make one!

Die cut paper cardinals flock around their tiny home in a flowering tree on this handmade birdhouse scene card.

Card Base, Frame, Tree and Grass

  • Cut an A2 sized card base using white cardstock, the frame using red cardstock and the scene background using light blue cardstock.
  • Trim the blue layer to fit well behind the frame.
  • Use green cardstock to cut the grass layers and tree leaves.
  • Cut the tree using Kraft cardstock and color it using brown ink and a wet baby wipe. Pro Tip 1:  I use this technique to color larger die cut images because it is so fast and much easier than trying to use a blender brush or marker. Make sure your wipe is very damp and just rub lightly over the cardstock.  Pro Tip 2:  I modified the tree to fit in my scene by cutting off the largest limb.

Baby Wipe Tree Inking

  • Place the leaves face up on the molding pad and gently form them with a leaf tool or fine detail tool.  Pro Tip:  You can find this tool in both the Susan’s Garden Tool Kit and the Sizzix Paper Sculpting Kit. It has a curved sharp tip that looks like a dental tool. This valuable tool is perfect to form small die cuts like leaves and is also perfect for scoring lines. You can see both these kits in my supply list below.
  • Attach the leaves to the tree using glossy accents.
  • Use yellow cardstock to cut a few sections of the tiny flowers.  Place them face up on the molding pad and form them by pushing down in the center with a small tipped stylus.

Assemble The Basic Images

  • Attach the blue background layer to the card base using ATG adhesive.
  • Apply strips of mounting tape to the back of the frame.
  • Attach the grass section and tree to the mounting tape on the back of the frame.
  • Reinforce the mounting tape where the tree and grass were attached with strips of double stick tape.
  • Line up the frame over the blue layer and attach to the card base.

Birdhouse, Foliage, Flowers and Birds

  • Cut the birdhouse sections using red, white and Kraft woodgrain cardstock.
  • Apply brown ink to the woodgrain post using a wet baby wipe and brown ink or simply apply the ink using a mini applicator.  Either technique works fine since it’s a small piece.
  • Assemble and attach the birdhouse pieces using rolled up double stick tape.  Pro Tip:  Rolling double stick tape creates the perfect attaching for thin pieces of cardstock like the roof and base.  I used 1/8″ tape for this project.

  • Use green cardstock to cut the small curvy vines.
  • Attach the tiny yellow flowers to all the foliage section using glossy accents.
  • Use glossy accents to attach the foliage and flower sections to the birdhouse.
  • Apply a piece of mounting tape to the back of the house and a slim strip to the post, tuck it in behind the grass and attach to the card base.
  • Tuck the rest of the foliage and flower sections in behind the grass and attach using glossy accents.
  • Cut the cardinals using red cardstock and color their beaks using a black marker.
  • Finish the scene by attaching the birds using pieces of mounting tape.

Remember, you can use the basic design of this handmade birdhouse scene card and switch up just about anything on it to make a whole fresh new card. Swap out the birdhouse, the birds, the season, use leaves instead of flowers, use a different style of flower…….the only limit to how these cards turn out is how many ways you can imagine them!
