Don’t die of shock but I couldn’t resist trading in my Christmas dies to create a decorative bird house with spring colors for my “anything but a card” series. It was fun transforming this small birdhouse with the little white fence and colorful flowers and foliage. I have a few more on a shelf in my closet, all different sizes and shapes, and I think I’ll decorate them all in different color combinations to create a grouping to decorate with when all the Christmas stuff comes down.
Attach the fence sections together using glossy accents.
Cut a strip of green cardstock 11 inches long.
Use the grass die to cut through the first half of the green strip, place the die at the end of the first cut and cut a second time. This creates a continuous length of grass to go all the way around the house.
Use glossy accents to attach the fence sections to the grass.
Measure out the folds for the grass and fence by placing them on birdhouse, holding them in place and bending them at each corner to prepare for final attachment.
Begin attaching by applying hot glue to the front section.
Continue applying hot glue all the way around the house to complete. Note: I used hot glue to attach any element being adhered directly to the wood house.
The Flowers, Ivy and Leaf Branches
Use green cardstock to cut several the large and small ivy and leafy branches. Note: I used five large ivy sections on each side of the house and three leaf branches on each side.
Cut the flower buds using purple cardstock.
Place the large ivy sections on the molding pad and score the leaves using the leaf tool.
Form the flowers using a small tipped stylus and molding pad.
Cut each small ivy section in half using scissors to create two sections.
Attach the flowers to the small and large ivy sections using glossy accents.
Attach the Flowers and Ivy
Tuck the small ivy and flower sections in behind the grass all the way around the house and attach using glossy accents.
Attach three leaf branches on each side of the house using hot glue. I applied the hot glue to the ends of the branches, overlapped them over the top of the birdhouse and attached. The main portion of the branches were left free to look natural.
Continue by adding the large flower covered ivy to both sides of the house. Attach three sections along the top of the house like with the leafy branches.
Tuck two additional ivy and flower branches under the existing branches on each side and attach slightly lower to create more length.
Attach several individual flowers all along the top of the house top to fill in and complete the arrangement.
The Front Arrangement
Cut a couple large ivy and flower sections apart to create three sections.
Use hot glue to attach the ivy and flowers sections to the house and perch.
This pretty spring decorative bird house is another example of how you can use your dies to create “anything but a card”, Consider how fun it would be to create a set decorated for each season. I sure have been enjoying creating cards with the new Rubbernecker May release and I especially love this spring/summer die cut fence scene. with the birds, flowers and bright sun image. I think the white scalloped layers add such a pretty touch to the scene. And once again I have to say how much I love using the Robin’s Egg cardstock as the main color for my project. It is such a lovely color of blue and makes me feel so happy.
The Tree
I cut a couple of the tree panels and cut the branches apart and pieced them back together to create the single tree for my scene. It sounds complicated but it really wasn’t hard to do. I kept the larger portion of one of the tree panels and just added branches in behind the main sections using glossy accents. I added and added until I felt like I had a whole tree for my scene. The next time I do this I will cut the panels in white and will color them branches and leaves with brown and green markers.
Die Cut Fence Scene
I attached the tree to the white scalloped layer using glue dots and glossy accents. I created a smaller tree foliage section for the right side of the scene and attached with glossy accents. The fence sections were cut and attached in front of the trees using mounting tape and then I added a green grass layer in front and attached with mounting tape. I created a small fence gate and attached in place to appear open and inviting you into the scene. I used left over sections of the tree panel branches to create flower stems and attached them using glossy accents. I formed lots of tiny flowers using my molding pad and stylus and attached them to the branches to create the flower border along the fence.
The Birdhouse, Birds and Sun
I cut and assembled the birdhouse and attached it up in the tree branches using a piece of mounting tape. I added several birds in the scene to add more color and attached them with pieces of mounting tape. I attached tiny pieces of foliage to the top and base of the birdhouse but it is hard to see them in the photo. I finished the scene by attaching the pretty yellow sun in the top right corner to offset the weight of the tree on the left.

I cut the tree panel out using white cardstock and colored it with brown and green Copic markers. The scalloped oval section was cut in half and trimmed down to fit in behind the frame. I attached the two frame sections together on the back using double stick tape and attached the scalloped grass sections. I applied thin strips of mounting tape to the back of the frame, trimmed the tree panel to fit and attached it to the mounting tape. I applied double stick tape to the back of the tree panel and frame and attached it to the blue card base.
Birdhouse, Birds and Flowers
I hand cut the tiny birdhouse using brown wood grain cardstock and punched a 1/8″ circle in it to create the birdhouse opening. I punched a 1/8″ circle in a piece of scrap cardstock, trimmed around the circle with my deckle scissors to create the white frame for the opening and attached it with glossy accents. I cut a corner section and straight section of scalloped frame border and attached them to the birdhouse using mounting tape. I attached the birdhouse to the card base with a piece of mounting tape. I cut another tree panel in green and cut the branches apart to use as flower stems. I used my small tipped stylus and molding pad to form the tiny flowers and then I attached them to the branches using glossy accents. I tucked the flower branches in behind the scalloped grass borders and attached with glossy accents.
The birds were attached to the scene using pieces of mounting tape. I finished by attaching one tiny flower and a couple small branches to the birdhouse using glossy accents. I love how the red flowers and red birds pop against the blue background, white frame and green grass.

Happy Easter morning. I have a spring die cut bird house scene card to share with you today made with leftover parts and pieces that were sitting on my desk from other projects. I love how the soft pastel colors pop with the white frame and card base. The frame and bird house roof was made using the Rubbernecker 5132D Rectangle Combo #2 OPC Die and the bird house body was made using 5003D Nested Rectangle Die. The scene was made using the 5126 Tree Panel #1 Die, 5142-05D Birds Die and 5114D Mini Flower Stack.
The frame sections and tree panel were attached together using double stick tape and then attached to the card base using mounting tape. The lavender and frame base was attached to the card base using mounting tape. The bird house was assembled using a rectangle piece and a section of scalloped frame and were attached together using mounting tape. I formed the tiny flowers using my stylus and molding pad and attached them with a few pieces of foliage to the house using glossy accents. I attached tiny pre made white Nuvo Crystal Drops to the flower centers using glossy accents. The birds were attached to the house and tree branch using mounting tape.

Spring is in the air and I love creating colorful scene cards with die cut bird houses. I have a little secret. I didn’t use a birdhouse die set to create my colorful bird houses. And, I have a surprise. I have a short video at the end of my post showing how simple it is to make the houses using nesting rectangle and square sets along with a decorative frame die. This is the first video I have shared on my blog since I did my three Ribbon Tying tutorials in 2008. I have lots of project ideas to share with you in the future and I’m sure my video technology skills will improve with practice. LOL!
I created my scene on a 6″ x 6″ card base so I could show off my three spring colored bird houses. I used a Grand Calibur Square die to cut the 6″ x 6″ square. I’m sorry I couldn’t find a set anywhere to link for you. All the images and foliage were cut using retired Stampin’ Up! cardstock from the Soft Subtles color family. I created a soft blue sky background on the card base using a cloud template, ink blending tool and Tumbled Glass ink. The frame and scalloped ground sections were attached together using double stick tape and then I attached thin strips of mounting tape to the back of the frame. I cut two tree panel sections and cut each of them apart right down the middle. I attached both halves of the first panel to the back of the mounting tape on the frame and then attached one trimmed section of the second tree panel to the center back of the frame. I applied double stick tape around the whole frame and attached it to the card base.
Assembling the Die Cut Bird Houses and Scene
I assembled the bird houses and attached a matching piece of cardstock to the backs of each so the scenery wouldn’t show through the circle openings. I wanted to decorate the holes on each birdhouse so I punched out circles on a piece of white cardstock and trimmed around each of them with my deckle scissors to create a decorative frame and attached them with glossy accents. Each assembled birdhouse was attached to a wood grain post and then attached to the card base using mounting tape. The foliage sections were tucked in behind the grass and around the bird houses using glossy accents. The tiny flowers were formed using my stylus and molding pad and I added both the birds and tiny flowers to the scene for the finishing touch.
I made this short video to show how I made the bird houses and also to encourage you to look at the products you have in your supply stash with new eyes. You never know what you may come up with.
