Peep This Handmade Window With Shutters Card!

So realistic and so sweet, this handmade window with shutters card is easier than it looks to make and can be used for any card sending reason!

I love making window cards. I think there’s something so magical about getting that little peek into someone’s world – without being peeping-tom-ish of course! Today I have made another handmade window with shutters card that adds just enough details to be interesting but lets the flower box and maybe those playful kitties take center stage. I used a scrap of paper from Rubbernecker’s Welcome Spring 6×6 Paper Pad and their Window with Shutters die set to make the window and that sweet little flower box. I filled it with blossoms made using their Small Flowers #5 and Flower Stems dies and then used their Cats die to accent the scene.

A handmade window with shutters card all made from die cuts for all the adorable, realistic details.

Let me give you my inside scoop so you can make one of these, too.

Card Base

  • Use white cardstock to cut an A2 sized card base.
  • Cut five .25″ x 4.25″ strips using mustard cardstock.
  • Attach the mustard strips to the card base, beginning at the bottom and make sure to overlap each layer as you work up the card base.

The Window Opening

I have a See Thru Window Card Video showing the steps for applying the siding and cutting the window opening.  It’s a different card and window but exactly the same concept. I suggest you take a peek at it if you are a visual learner – it shows all the details. If you prefer to read the directions, here they all are:

  • Line up the window die in the center of card base.  Pro Tip:  A centering ruler makes it fast and easy to center dies on a card front.
  • Place the card base and die on the cutting platform and cut.
  • Place the card base face down on the the work surface.
  • Insert the window face down in the opening and secure in place with double stick tape. Pro Tip:  I secured the window first with a piece of masking tape to hold it perfectly in place for when I began attaching the double stick tape.
  • Turn the card base face up on the work surface.
  • Cut a second window.
  • Apply thin strips of rolled up double stick tape all the way around the back of the window
  • Line the window up over the original window and attach to the card base. Pro Tip:  This step isn’t necessary but I wanted the window to have a more dominant presence with the shutters.
  • Cut a piece of designer paper large enough to cover the window opening.
  • Apply strips of mounting tape all the way around the layer and attach it to the inside of the card base.

A small collections of dies from Rubbbernecker came together to create this adorable, realistic handmade window with shutters card.

Shutters and Window Flower Box

  • Use white cardstock to cut the shutters and window box.
  • Apply connect glue to the window box squares and attach them to the box.
  • Apply 1/8″ strips of double stick tape to the inner back side of the shutters and thin strips of mounting tape to the outer edges and attach them to the card base. Pro Tip:  I wanted the inner side of the shutters to fit flush against the window.  Adding mounting tape on the outer edges allows the shutters to stand away from the card base for an additional touch of dimension.

Window Box Flowers and Cats

  • Use green cardstock to cut several sections of Flower Stems.
  • Cut the Small Flowers #5 using red cardstock and form them using the molding pad and small tipped stylus.
  • Attach the flowers to the green stems using glossy accents.
  • Tuck the flower branches behind the window box and attach using glossy accents.
  • Apply a piece of mounting tape to the back of the window box and attach it to the card base.
  • Cut the cats using white cardstock.
  • Color the black spots to the cat body and ears using a black marker.
  • Attach the cats to the scene using pieces of mounting tape.

Here’s what I used from Rubbernecker to make this – I use all of these five things so much more than I ever expected!

I just love all the details I was able to add to this handmade window with shutters card both from the design of the die and getting that wallpaper, siding, overflowing window box and of course, the cute little cats. Something that I REALLY love about these window cards is that you can pop any sentiment on the front or inside and you’ve got a beautiful handmade card that you can use for any occasion.
