Get To Know The EH Design Team Blog Hop

Ellen Designer Badge

Welcome to the Ellen Hutson design team blog hop. This is such a fun opportunity for each of us to show off our favorite style of paper crafting and to share a couple fun tidbits.  Even as a seasoned card maker, I enjoy learning tips and tricks from other paper crafters.  My favorite tip/trick to share is that layering die cuts on your card front adds depth and dimension to a scene project.  My project today shows my love of creating die cut scenes with an interesting focal set of images that draws the eye in with the layering of die cuts.

Create dimension and interest by layering die cuts on card fronts.

Cutting and Coloring the Images and Scene Background

I began by cutting out all the die cut images, flowers, foliage, frame and grass sections for the scene.  You can see all the die sets below.  The canopy of tree branches was cut using white cardstock and colored using Pear Tarts and Toffee Crunch markers and then I applied touches of Vintage Photo and Peeled Paint ink with a mini applicators to add a depth of color. The mother ducks were cut with white Neenah heavyweight cardstock and the babies were cut using Sour Lemon cardstock. I lightly sponged Wild Honey ink on the baby bodies with a mini applicator and darker shade of the ink to the beaks and feet.  The dragonflies (which are very hard to see in the scene) were cut using Essentials by Ellen Vellum,  colored using Tumbled Glass and Peeled Paint markers and then painted with a clear Wink of Stella brush tip marker.

I created a cloudy background for the scene on a piece of white cardstock using Tumbled Glass ink, an Inky Antics cloud stencil and a Ranger ink blending tool.  I applied the Tumbled Glass ink to a second piece of cardstock to create the water layer and hand cut it using my deckle scissors.  Hint:  I love using my deckle scissors for cutting when I don’t want to have a perfectly flat edge on the paper.  The uneven cut creates a more natural appearance like the wavy edge of my water.

Create dimension by layering die cuts.

Building the Scene

The tree canopy frame, water and grass layers were attached to the blue sky background layer using double stick tape.  Next, I attached thin strips of mounting tape to the eyelet frame and attached it to the scene layer.  I applied double stick tape to the back of the framed layer and attached it to the card base.

The tall grass sections were cut apart and tucked in behind the grass section and attached with glossy accents. The ducks were popped up and attached to the scene base using pieces of mounting tape.  I formed the tiny flowers using my stylus and molding and attached them to the foliage stems with glossy accents. I tucked the the flower stems in behind the layers and around the ducks and attached with glossy accents.  I attached the dragonflies to the scene with touches of glossy accents for the finishing touch.

Create dimension and interest by layering die cuts.

Ellen thought it would be fun for us to answer the questions below.

    • Coffee or tea? COFFEE!  COFFEE!  COFFEE!
    • How did you come up with your blog name? I had a part-time county craft business in the 1980s that I named Kittie Kraft and  made wreaths and floral arrangements using silk and dried flowers.  I thought it would be perfect to resurrect the name for my blog.
    • Tell us one silly/random/interesting tidbit about yourself! I love paper crafting but it pales in comparison to the love I have for my puppy and cats.  My husband and I are both crazy about our pets and treat them like our babies.  My puppy thinks that I hung the moon and my cats just think I’m “staff”!  LOL!

I hope you enjoy the hop and getting to know each of the designers on our team.

handmade die cut ourdoor birdhouse scene card

My project today paired the new Better Together set with the Elizabeth Craft Designs Lilac set, Impression Obsession Foliage set and framed using the All-in-One Frames Squares 2 set.

I stamped the images, colored using mini applicators, a water brush, distress ink and reinkers and then cut them out.   I used an ink blending tool and cloud template to create the sky background for the scene.  I attached the fence image to the back of the frame using double stick tape and then attached it to the card base using mounting tape.

making a handmade die cut ourdoor birdhouse scene cardis so much fun

I cut an extra roof section and attached it to the main birdhouse using rolled glue dots. I attached sections of the foliage to the tree branch using glossy accents and then attached it to the scene using tiny pieces of mounting tape.  The birdhouse was attached to the scene using a mounting tape and a small string was attached to the branch and tree house using glue dots.  I tucked several pieces of foliage in behind the fence using glossy accents.  I formed tiny flowers using a stylus and molding pad, added tiny pre made white Nuvo Crystal Drops  to the flower centers and attached using glossy accents.  I finished by attaching flowers to the branch and foliage using glossy accents.

Floral Framed Flower and Foliage

Good Saturday morning.  I have a flower project to share with you today using one of my favorite color combinations and the Hero Arts Daisy Cutting Set, Floral Border with Frame and My Favorite Things Leafy Greenery.  I love the white floral frame against the purple background. I made this card for the Splitcoaststampers Free For All Challenge to create a project with a bow.

I attached the die cut frame to the card base using strips of mounting tape.  I used my stylus and molding pad to form the petals of each flower layer and attached them together with glossy accents.  I placed the whole set of greenery dies on my platform and cut.

I attached a few of the larger sections of foliage in the center of the card base and attached with glossy accents.  I attached the flower with glossy accents and then filled in with smaller greenery around the flower attaching with glossy accents. I added a smaller flower and a pearl  to the center of the main flower to complete it.  I finished the project with a small multi loop bow.

I have to laugh as I finish my post.  I didn’t realize that my foliage took on a sort of windmill shape.  It wasn’t really what I was going for.  It’s funny that I didn’t really notice it while I was arranging.

Thanks for coming by and I hope you have a great Saturday.

Paper Layering Hummingbird and Lawn Fawn Sale

Good Tuesday morning.  My project today was made using the new Hero Arts Paper Layering Hummingbird Pair and the new Penny Black Graceful Greenery paired with the My Favorite Things Pierced Square Frames and Impression Obsession Tiny Flowers.  The lavender frame mat was cut using a square Nestabilities.

I started by attaching the two square frames together with double stick tape and then attached it to the card base using thin strips of mounting tape. I cut three sections of the Graceful Greenery and lightly formed the leaves using my stylus and molding pad. I arranged two of the whole greenery sections around the top of the frame and attached them with glossy accents. I cut the third section into a couple pieces and attached with glossy accents.

I formed the tiny flowers with my stylus and molding pad and attached them to the greenery with glossy accents.  I cut one lavender and one dark purple hummingbird.  I applied rolled up glue dots to the back of the lavender bird and attached it over top of the purple bird and offsetting it slightly to create a dark outline.   I thought the purple outline would allow the bird to show up better against the white background.

I wasn’t sure how this was going to turn out but I love the flow of the greenery and flowers around the frame.  I think the hummingbird image is beautiful.  Next time I will try my hand at applying at coloring it.

Straight Stamping with MISTI

Good Saturday afternoon.  I love the new Hero Arts Daisy Cutting Set and wanted to make a clean and simple card that lets it be the main focus. I paired it with the My Favorite Things Leafy Greenery, Lawn Fawn Fancy Scalloped Rectangle Stackables and the tiny flowers from the Elizabeth Craft Sunflower and the Elizabeth Craft Take Time sentiment.

Do you have a MISTI or Mini MISTI? I love paper crafting and playing with dies, stamps and ink but I have to admit that I am the world’s worst at lining stamped sentiments.  I took a couple photos this morning to show how I used the MISTI to guarantee a perfectly straight image.

KC Hero Arts Daisy Cutting Set 2 right

I placed the scalloped layer on the MISTI, lined it up perfectly and anchored it in place with the magnets. I placed the sentiment stamp exactly where I wanted it to be on the paper.

Misti step 1

I closed the clear lid of the MISTI and lightly pushed down on it to secure the stamp in place and opened it.  I applied ink to the stamp, then closed the lid and pressed firmly with my fingers directly over the stamp. The sentiment was stamped perfectly.

misti step 2

I cut a brown cardstock strip about one inch wide and then die cut with the scalloped rectangle so it would line up over the white layer. I applied ATG adhesive to the back of the strip and attached to the white layer making sure the top and bottom eyelet holes matched up. I applied thin strips of mounting tape to the back of the white layer and attached it to the card base.

KC Hero Arts Daisy Cutting Set 2 center

I cut the flowers using Marshmallow Chick cardstock. I applied Wild Honey Distress Ink to the inner portion of the flowers with a mini applicator and lightly worked the color partially out on each petal to add depth of color for a more natural look. I placed the flowers face down on the molding pad and formed the petals using the large ball end of the stylus from the Garden Tool Kit.  I turned the flower face up on the molding pad and gently pushed down on the center of the flower to press the petals upward. I cut the round center section of the set using the Peanut Fudge cardstock , formed it with the stylus and molding pad to create a round dome. I cut a whole section of the mini flowers to match the flower center, molding them with a tiny tipped stylus and molding pad and attached them all around the flower center with glossy accents. I cut the foliage using Easter Grass cardstock, trimmed the ends off to shorten so they would fit on the card well and attached them to the brown strip with glossy accents.  The flower was secured in place of the foliage and attached with glossy accents.

Now is the time to purchase a MISTI if you haven’t taken the plunge yet.  Ellen Hutson is holding a special event and is offering a free stamp set with the purchase of a MISTI or Mini MISTI.  While you are at it you may want to check out the new MISTI Creative Corners. The MISTI is even more incredible with the addition of the Creative Corners! These magnetic corners and positioning pieces provide even more possibilities for precision stamping with the MISTI.  Ellen just got them in the store and I placed my order yesterday.  Woo Hoo!  See link below.
