Dirty Dozen/Dirty Dozen Alumni Monthly Challenge

This is our seventh DD/DDA monthly challenge.  Jami came up with a fun challenge this month to use owls. It is fun to watch the image trends in the stamping community. I don’t remember seeing many owls or at least paying attention to them but recently they seem to be everywhere. There are big ones, fat ones, little ones but they all have something in common….fun faces and the typical owl expression.  Not only were we to use an owl image but we were to incorporate texture into the project and we were restricted on the use of crystals or dew drop embellishments.  No worries for me…I don’t have any. You can view the rule list below and click here to see the full members gallery for this challenge.

Whoo Hoo! Owl  Owl
Owls seem to be everywhere right now, so let’s jump on the bandwagon. Whoo Hoo!

Challenge Focus: Owls. If you don’t have an owl image you may use any flighted fowl to play.

Required Element: Texture. You may interpret this any way you like – please explain in your upload description

Restricted Element: No crystals/rhinestones or dew drop type embellishments.

Keyword: DCWH508 (for Dirty Challenge Whoo Hoo May 08 )

I had to go on a hunt for an owl image as I did not have one in my entire stash of stamps.  I couldn’t believe it. I went shopping on line and found a darling set by Inkadinkado called The Aviary Assortment.  The set had two different owls but I chose to use a larger fat owl image.  The set had a darling sentiment –Friendship (That means you Chick) and I knew I had to use it and create a scene with two good friends sitting in the trees.  I stamped the owl twice on scrap watercolor paper, watercolored with reinkers and cut it out.  I sketched a large tree trunk, painted it and then added leaf images and ground cover with my mini fern stamp and sponged over it to fill in.  I created a second leaf layer on watercolor paper with the fern stamp and cut it out to create a bit of a tree canopy over the two owls. Ok….I know it’s a bit of a stretch but I think it looks cute.  I ran the canopy layer through the crimper to add a bit of texture (a require element for the challenge). I also created little patches of popped up ground area to the bottom base of the card to ground the scene.  I went to Michelle (zindorf’s) blog to find one of her great step by step tutorials on creating her great night sky with moonlight.  I used her instructions and modified a bit as I didn’t do some of the embossing she uses as it wasn’t necessary for my project.  I like how my sky appears with the darkness around the bottom of the tree and the moon light is behind the upper branches.  I thought the owls would look so cute layered in this area.  I added some sparkle (more texture) with versa and iridescent ice embossing powder to not only the owls but the tree and night sky.  I wanted everything to look shimmery in the moonlight but don’t think it shows well in the photo. This was a fun, fun project to work on.
