Colorful Fall Leaf Wreath and Blog Candy

Good Sunday morning.  I have a colorful leaf wreath to share with you today. Before I talk about my project I want to give you another opportunity to win some blog candy this week. I have a Memory Box Jingle Bell Border to share with you. All you have to do to qualify is leave a comment telling me about a technique you would like to try to learn. You will have until 5:00 pm EST on Wednesday, October 24th to qualify.

Memory Box Dies, Jingle Bell Border

I tried my hand at making colorful paper to create my leaves by using alcohol ink and glossy paper. You should see my fingers. LOL! I have no experience using alcohol inks and truthfully I am a little fearful of them but I have had several bottles for a long time.  I decided that if  I could  spread water based ink out on my craft sheet and spray it with water and create a palette to apply on cardstock then I could possibly do the same with alcohol and alcohol blending solution.

KC Impression Obsession Leaves 2 right

I spread several dabs of different colored inks on my craft sheet and misted heavily with alcohol blending solution. I laid glossy paper face down on the ink mixture and pushed down with my fingers to spread the ink all over the paper.  The ink slides out from under the paper (thus my inky fingers) and creates a mess but it was worth it.  The colors are beautiful and the glossiness of the paper enhances their appearance. I heat dried the paper  before cutting the leaves.

I cut lots of the3 smaller leaves from Leaves set and formed them with my stylus and mat. I cut the wreath and branch and sponged with brown ink and formed them the stylus and mat.   I attached the wreath to the base of the card using a piece of mounting tape.  I began by applying the largest leaves with glossy accent to create the base of the leaf spray.  I then attached the two smaller leaves to fill in the spray.  I attached the multi loop bow and then added a few pieces of the bare branch for the finishing touch.KC Impression Obsession Leaves 2 close

Here is a little closer view of the leaves.  Aren’t they pretty? I wish I had a larger version to place on my front door.

  7. Love your wreath, and the colors are so vibrant! I wear inexpensive plastic gloves when working with alcohol inks as it saves my fingers since it’s always a mess. I would love to learn how to design beautiful cards like you do. Do you experiment a lot or does the idea just appear in your head? How do you select your folders and dies for a design? Thanks for the chance to win the jingle bell die. Have a great week-end.

  13. Love your card this morning, as always, and I love working with alcohol inks. It may not take it all off, but try a bit of blending solution on your fingers and see if that will remove some of the ink. It works for cleaning up my craft sheet.
I would love instructions on achieving shabby chic…no matter what I do, my clean and simple style overrides and I just can’t achieve the look.

Stunning! You have truly captured the feeling of fall. I can almost smell the crispness in the air. Love this piece! I am fascinated by the art you create. I’d really love to learn more about how you build your pieces, and what are the basics needed to start creating scenes like yours? Things like, what are good basic dies to buy, stamps, supplies, etc. Just some things that might be a jumping off point for creating some of your wonderful pieces.

  47. Kittie – I have always shide away from Glossy Paper and alcohol inks (although I have some sitting in my cupboard), so seeing – and following your description of how you jumped right in and made your leaves, tells me – what the heck – it’s just paper and ink – so I’m going to give it a try. I’m also fascinated with the ‘mixed media’ craft technique, so I’ll look for a class on that, too.
    Thanks for sharing with us.

The technique I want to master is “scenes”. I have tried a few, but definitely need to practice. I LOVE your farm scene and fall scene tutorials-even bought the stamps. Now, I just need to take the plunge-haha.

  51. Oops, forgot to say….you could just put the alcohol inks on the applicator pads and swirl/smash it around on your glossy paper. Then, if you want it lighter use the blending solution. That would save your fingers from getting messy!

  52. Good evening, Kittie, absolutely fantastic. What a project. Inky fingers and all, worth every inky finger.I haven’t used alcohol inks, but did something similar but used acrylic, Delta color, used in tole painting on wood and fabric, inks.Technique is Done like you did mixing etc, and they are water based and easy clean up. Makes lovely watercolors for background paper, think I will try this for leaves. don’t have the alcohol inks. You are so inspiring….. tutorial on these inks, and how you made the glowing light behind the stain glass window, would be nice. Love both of these techniques…..have a good evening
