Open Framed Quatrefoil and Tutorial

Good Saturday afternoon.  I have another Taylored Expressions Quatrefoil Cutting Plate project to share with you today.  This time I wanted to show off the lovely design by framing it in a see thru window. I created the flowers from the shapes left from the cut and paired them with leaves and flowers from the Impression Obsession Hydrangea Set

I cut an opening in the front of the card base using the 3rd largest die in from the Matting Basics B set.

1

I cut a frame 5.25” x 4” using the 3rd largest die from the Matting Basics A set.  This frame is one size larger the opening and will be used to attach the quatrefoil on the inside of the opening to create a clean finish.

3

2

I applied ATG adhesive to the back side of the frame and attached the quatrefoil to it.

4

5

I applied another layer of adhesive on around the edges of the frame and quatrefoil, turned it over and attached it to the inside of the opening. Make note of how nice and finished the inside looks.

6

I formed the left over pieces with my large stylus and molding pad. I started with the back side of the flower face down and worked around the edges to turn them up. I rolled the stylus around the center also to lightly soften the paper.

7

I used the small stylus on the opposite end of the leaf tool to go around the edges again and curl them up a little more.

8

I turned the flower face up on the pad and pushed down in the center to form the flower.  Notice that the edges retained the backward curl.

8a

I used the same technique to form the smaller hydrangea blossoms.

9

I applied glossy accents in the center of the first flower and placed the second flower off center inside it.  I had to work the flower around with my fingers to hold off center and then pushed down and held in place with my leaf tool.

10

11

I didn’t want to use glossy accents to attach the two smaller flowers because I knew they would set a little too low.  I grabbed a micro glue dot with the tip of my leaf tool and lightly rolled it with my fingers to create a mount for the small flower.  I was very careful not to touch the glue dot too much as the oil in my fingers can ruin it’s stickiness.

12

13

I gently attached the rolled glue dot to the tip of the leaf tool and placed in the opening of the flower.

14

I placed the small flower over top of the glue dot and pushed gently down until it was secure.  I didn’t push so hard that the glue dot would be squished down because I wanted it to hold the flower up. I repeated this step again to attach the smallest flower.

15

Although the hydrangea die leaves scored vein lines on the leaf I still turned it over and applied deeper scoring with my leaf tool. I gently formed them with my fingers rolling the tips and edges.

16

I attached the three leaves together from the front with glossy accents.  The back of the leaves are perfectly clean so they will look nice and finished from the inside.  I applied glossy accents directly on the front of the card base and attached the leaves in place.

 17

18

I applied glossy accents to the back of each flower and attached to the leaves.  I pushed down on the bottom petals with my leaf tool to hold in place for a few seconds to make sure it is secure.

This is taken from the inside of the framed opening.

21

The inside of the frame is as nicely finished as the outside.

I enjoy creating simple open see thru cards.  To me the opening with the quatrefoil is lovely on it’s own.  I chose to design the leaves and flowers on the corner so they wouldn’t cover up much of the design.

  3. Good Afternoon, Kittie. this Quatrefoil is a super die. You have done such wonderful creations with it, and this design is simply beautiful.I love the bright deep blue, color, and so thankful for your tutorial.
Question” on the inside for a message? would you write one, or place a photo, or stamp? Me I think I would stamp a bouquet of flowers to match the ones creative in the middle of massage page, an then write around it. Suggestions? thank you sooo much. …have a good day, and a good week-end

  5. Gorgeous card Kittie….you are a genius to make the frame to attach the quatrefoil to. I just made 6 cards for a swap using this die and had quite a time getting the glue to hold…would have been soooooooo much easier had I taken your approach with the frame…will remember this for the next time I use this lovely die!!! TFS your expertise – I really enjoy your blog!

  10. I was trying to resist buying the Quatrefoil die but I can clearly see that I will be able to make so many cards for the markets that will pay for itself. Keep those designs coming kittie, they are brightening my day here with more snow falling.
