Hovering Sea Birds

Good Thursday morning.  I have a simple beach scene to share with you today with the main focus on the birds hovering along the coast line.  I love the Impression Obsession Sea Birds set because the make such realistic gulls.  I paired them with the Beach Fence and Small Grass dies with a frame cut using the We R Memory Keepers Nesting Frame 10

I sponged in the sand and water using a Color Box stylus and foam tip.  I used Post-It removable labeling tape to Mask off the water line and then removed it and sponged in the clouds. I hand sketched in the sea grass along the sand edges with a green marker.  I applied Liquid Applique in the water to create sea foam and then dabbed it with my finger to smooth out the bubbles and then heated.  Notice the sea foam spots are made larger closer to the water’s edge and much smaller out in the distance.

The frame was attached to the card base with mounting tape.  The fence was cut using kraft cardstock.  Before cutting the fence I applied brown ink directly to the paper to create a worn wood texture.  I cut the bottom off the fence sections to shorten so it wouldn’t cover too much of the sandy part of the scene.  I bent the pickets backward and forward to create the weather worn appearance of an old fence and tucked it in behind the frame attaching with glossy accents.  I added a few sprigs of sea grass pieces to match the hand sketched ones in the background.  The birds were cut using white cardstock and colored with a pumice stone marker and attached in the scene with pieces of mounting tape.  I wanted the largest bird to appear as if he was swooping into the scene and the other two to appear further in the distance.

I love making beach scenes and most of them resemble each other but I don’t care because I never tire of making them.  I appreciate you stopping by and I hope you are having a wonderful week.

  1. Good Morning, Kittie, I love your beach scenes. So detailed like you are walking in the sand and can smell the sea. I can’t swim, but love to walk along the beach an collect shells, and sit in the sand and listen to the sea. I feel that peace with your scenes. ……have a good day.

  4. Of course, I LOVE this card … and I am so excited to own all of the dies you used!! 🙂
I understand how you put the scene together EXCEPT for the sand/water. I understand masking the sea line to add the clouds, but how do you mask the water line to add the sand or the sand line to add the water? Your sand has an AWESOME shaped edge. Is it something that I could easily recreate? OR should I just stick to straight lines … which I haven’t even perfected yet? LOL
You are so EXCEPTIONALLY TALENTED… Living in Florida and so close to the beach, I really appreciate your scenes. I hope I am even half as successful as you to make my own. 🙂

  5. Kitty, I love your beach scenes too. They always look soo realistic. I am wondering how you got the shadows under the seagulls. That really makes the scene look real.

  6. Judy, check out my Beach Scene tutorial here: http://www.kittiekraft.com/beach-scene-tutorial.html I wil show the basic steps to mask off the water line. I don’t mask off the sand line. I just try to be careful to not allow the blue and brown to overlap much. It is much easier to do now than in the pics of the tutorial as I use the color box stylus and foam tops tosponge on the color. They allow much more pricise sponging. I hope tihis helps. Thnks for your lovely compliment.

  9. What a beautiful scene you’ve created, Kittie. I was at the beach today but it didn’t look at pretty as your beach.

  10. I really like how it looks like we are getting a glimpse of the ocean. Reminds me of driving down Highway 12 *Outer Banks* and being able to see the ocean in between the sand dunes. Beautiful card, Kittie!
