Make a Layered Die Cut Circle Frame For an Easy Card!

Today I am showing you how to make a layered die cut circle frame so you can pop them over patterned paper for almost instant cards!

When I saw the new Rubbernecker Decorative Floral Circle Die set, I immediately knew I wanted to make a layered die cut circle frame to set behind it and really let it stand out. This card actually comes together so fast because all you have to do is add it over a pretty piece of patterned paper and I added the little flourishes that come in the die set that coordinate with the colors in the paper. This is one of those cards you can make over and over and it will always look special.

For this card I used the new Welcome Spring 6×6 Paper Pad  and Kittie Says Friends.  The circle frame openings were cut using a retired Rubbernecker Nested Circle set. If you haven’t checked out the designs on this Paper Pad, you just have to go and look at them because every single one of them will look just gorgeous with this card design!

Once you learn how make a layered die cut circle frame like this you can add it to any patterned paper panel and make a card in moments!

The Card Base

  • Use white cardstock to cut an A2 (8.50″ x 5.50″) sized card base and score at 4.25″ with the 8.50″  side along the top of the Scor-Pal.
  • Cut a 5.50″ x 4.25″ layer using a pretty floral pattern paper from the Welcome Spring 6×6 Paper Pad.
  • Apply ATG adhesive on the back of the floral paper layer and attach it to the card base.  Pro Tip:  I trim about a 1/8″ off the side and bottom of the card base before attaching the floral paper to guarantee the card base is totally covered.

To create this beautiful detailed card with the floral patterned background, make a layered die cut circle frame and add it to the center for some textural pop and a spot for your stamped sentiment.

The Decorative Floral Frame

  • Use white cardstock to cut the Decorative Floral Circle die.  Pro Tip:  To cut this die I used Papertrey white 110lb cardstock, ran it through my Big Shot one way, turned the cutting platform set up around making sure to leave the die in place and ran it through the opposite direction and got a perfect cut.  You may want to use a shim when cutting a delicate die like this or use 80lb cardstock.  If you continue to have problems you may want to check out how worn your cutting plates are.  I replace mine when they get overly worn.
  • Place the decorative layer back on the platform, line up the circle die, secure in place with masking tape and run through the machine.  Pro Tip:  Using masking tape to secure your dies in place makes easy work when you need to cut with precise measurements.

  • Cut an additional white layer, line up and  cut a double circle opening using the next size larger circle die and the next size smaller circle die from the original frame opening to create a mat for the decorative frame.

  • Apply pieces of mounting tape to the back of the decorative frame and attach to the circle mat layer.

  • Secure the circle mat in place on your work station with a piece of masking tape, line up the decorative frame and attach it to the mat.

  • Apply double stick tape to the back of the matted decorative frame and attach it to the card base.

The Die Cut Embellishments and Sentiment

  • Cut the decorative sections from the die set using green, white and purple cardstock.
  • Cut a thin white strip, secure it and the Kittie Says Friends stamp in the MISTI and stamp using Nocturne ink.
  • Trim the sentiment strip to fit across the frame opening and attach it using pieces of mounting tape.
  • Attach the green decorative vine sections to the frame using glossy accents.
  • Adhere the white flower center and  flower to the frame using glossy accents.

Get the details to make a layered die cut circle frame like this with its decorative layer adding all the pretty elegant texture against a floral patterned paper background.

  1. This card is absolutely gorgeous. I got my die and paper pad in the mail a few minutes ago and will make this card tonight. This design will work for so many occasions just by changing the sentiment. Mother’s Day, sympathy card, birthday, etc. I love it.
