Come see how to make this handmade die cut Santa scene card – just cut, assemble and arrange!
I thought I would post this fun card as inspiration for those who make holiday cards all year long. I really do love making cards with Santa on them – he’s such a classic motif for the holidays. I’ve made quite a few Santa cards that you can see here and I can’t imagine that I will ever stop! Today’s handmade die cut Santa scene card is set in a fun die cut window which I chose specifically to be able to add a jaunty “Ho Ho Ho” in a fun way.
The red frame was made with Rubbernecker’s Window with Circles Stitch die which I love for its versatility, the words were made with their Small Classic Alphabet, and the main man with his accoutrements were made with Rubbernecker’s Santa with Presents, Santa’s Sleigh, Flying Reindeer, Three Pine Tree Forest, Deckle Hills, and Greenery #1 dies to add all the details.
Let me share all the fun details of the making of this project with you.
Card Base and Die Cut Frame
- Use white cardstock to cut an A2 sized card base.
- Cut the Windows with Circle Stitch frame using red cardstock.
- Cut a Deckle Hills section using white cardstock and then cut again with the frame die so it would fit perfectly inside the large frame opening.
- Apply strips of mounting tape to the back of the frame and attach it to the card base. Pro Tip: I apply small pieces of mounting tape in between circle section to keep them from collapsing on the base.
- Cut a section of the Three Pine Tree Forest and run the trees through the straight crimper. Pro Tip: Crimping the trees adds dimension and interest to the trees.
- Apply pieces of mounting tape to the back of the trees and attach them to the card base
- Apply a strip of mounting tape to the back of the snow layer, tuck it inside the frame opening and attach it to the trees and base.
- Use red cardstock to cut the Ho Ho Ho’s from the Small Classic Alphabet.
- Apply strings of rolled up 1/8″ double stick tape to the back of the letters and attach them to the card base.
- Embellish with tiny Greenery tips and gold 1/8″ circles.
Santa and His Sleigh
- Use red, white , black and gold metallic cardstock to cut the Santa pieces.
- Assemble all the pieces and attach them together using glossy accents. Note: I used black cardstock and gold cardstock for Santa’s belt but it’s mostly covered up with the sleigh.
- Use red, white, gold and green cardstock to cut the presents and Santa’s bag.
- Assemble and attach the pieces together and attach them using glossy accents.
- Cut the sleigh section using red cardstock, gold runner and gold sleigh trim using gold metallic cardstock.
- Apply rolled up double stick tape to the back of the gold trim and attach it to the top border of the sleigh.
- Use glossy accents to attach the gold runner to the sleigh section.
- Use glossy accents and tiny pop dots to attach Santa, the presents and Santa’s bag to the back side of the sleigh.
The Reindeer
- Cut the reindeer using white cardstock and the harness using red and white cardstock.
- Apply Mocha ink to the whole body of the reindeer using a mini applicator.
- Use Pecan ink to apply darker shading to the body using a mini applicator. 1. Pro Tip: I applied the light colored ink to the whole body to add moisture to the paper so when the brown ink was applied it blends more easily. You can start with with dry cream cardstock but the brown ink doesn’t flow over the dry paper as well and can get blotchy. 2. Pro Tip: I cannot stress enough how much easier it is to apply and blend inks using the Sofft Mini Applicators because they are such high quality.
- Attach the harness sections and the red Rudolph nose to the reindeer using glossy accents.
Finish The Die Cut Santa Card
- Cut a length of metallic gold string long enough to double up for the reins.
- Fold the string in half and attach the folded section to the reindeer and attach on the back with glue dots.
- Trim the string ends as necessary to fit and attach to the back of the sleigh using glue dots.
- Apply a large piece of mounting tape to the back of the Santa’s sleigh and attach to the card.
- Cut two large piece of mounting tape, attach them together, apply them to the back of the reindeer and attach him to the card. Pro Tip: I doubled the mounting tape for the reindeer because I wanted him to stand well away to look like he was really flying.
