Learn how to create cards with double matted frames to draw attention to the main focal images and sentiments.
Today I’m sharing another example of how to create cards with double matted frames with layered oval die cuts. I shared how to do this with circles in a previous post and I got so many people saying how glad they were to learn the tips I’ve picked up. Today I am sharing the same process with ovals so you can see how the frame accentuates the main focal image. To make this card I used the Decorative Rectangle, Classic Nested Oval, Stackable Flowers and Leaves #1, Branches and Leaves and Kittie Says Phrases #1. The floral background was made using a piece from the Welcome Spring 6×6 Paper Pad.
Card Base, Layered Oval Die Cut Frame and Sentiment
- Use white cardstock to cut an A2 sized card base and the Decorative Rectangle.
- Cut a 5.50″ x 4.25″ decorative paper layer from the Welcome Spring 6×6 and attach it to the card base using double stick tape.
- Place a large oval die from the Nested Oval set on the rectangle, secure in place with masking tape and run through the machine to cut.
- Cut a white rectangle layer large enough to fit behind the large oval frame, secure the smaller rectangle in place and run the through the machine. Pro Tip: Using masking tape to secure your dies in place makes easy work when you need to cut with precise measurements.
- Apply pieces of mounting tape to the back of the decorative frame and attach to the oval mat layer.
- Apply double stick tape to the back of the double matted frame and attach it to the card base.
You can see step by step photos of how I create my double matted frames on my Make a Layered Die Cut Circle Frame. The pictures show the steps using circle dies but the concept is exactly the same. Try this out with other nested die sets you have and see what marvelous designs you can create!
Assemble the Flower and Foliage
- Cut the Stackable Flowers and Leaves #1 flower sections using white cardstock.
- Place the flower layers face down on the molding pad and gently push down on each petal with a large round stylus to add a touch of dimension.
- Place the flower sections face up on the molding pad and push down in the centers using a small tipped stylus to push the petals up.
- Attach the flower layers together using glossy accents. Pro Tip: Make sure to offset each layer for a more natural looking flower.
- Apply glossy accents to the back of the large flower and attach it to the corner of the double matted frame.
- Use white cardstock to cut the Branches and Leaves foliage.
- Tuck the foliage sections under the flower and attach in place using flossy accents. Pro Tip: Gently lift the flower petal with your fingers, slip the foliage branch under the flower and then push down with your paper piercer or tweezers to secure in place
The Sentiment Strip
- Use white cardstock to cut a 1.00″ strips of cardstock to use for the sentiment.
- Secure the sentiment stamp and white strip in the MISTI and stamp using black ink.
- Trim the strip to fit inside the oval frame, tuck it in behind the frame layer and attach in place using a piece of mounting tape.
- I finished the card by adding a few crystal clear sequins to add one more feminine touch.
