Create an Ocean Scene Background using Masking Technique

I love to create an ocean scene background to highlight interesting focal images like the bicycle and sea grass.  The masking technique is fast and easy and yet creates depth in the background that draws the eye back into the scene.  For this project I used the Rubbernecker Bicycle, Sea Grass, Deckle Hills, Small Birds and Rectangle Combo OPC #4.

Creating an ocean scene background for an interesting main focal image is fun, fast and easy. Click thru to see how I created my background using a blender brush, ink and the masking technique.

The Ocean Scene Background

  • Use white cardstock to cut a scene layer 5 1/8″ x 3 7/8″ to fit behind the frame.
  • Attach a piece of masking tape straight across the center of the cardstock.
  • Apply a dark shade of Tumbled Glass ink to the lower portion of the masked section using a large blender brush. :Note:  I am in love with my Life Changing Blender Brush set.  They make applying color to a large area like my scene a breeze.
  • Remove the masking tape.
  • Create the lightly shaded cloudy sky background to the upper portion of the scene using a cloud stencil and blender brush.
  • Start applying the cloud layers at the top of the page and moving the stencil down to create the layers.
  • Apply light touches of white embossing paste to the water using your finger and then sprinkle with clear glitter to add a touch of sparkle.  Allow the paste to dry.

The Frame and Sand Layers

  • Use white cardstock to cut the frame layers.
  • Turn the frame sections face down and attach them together using double stick tape.
  • Cut two sand layers using Kraft cardstock.
  • Apply strips of mounting tape to the back of the frame and then attach one sand layer to the back of the mounting tape.
  • Adhere double stick tape to the back of the sand layer and then attach the ocean scene background layer to the back of the frame.
  • Apply double stick tape to the back of the frame/scene layer and attach it to the card base. Note:  I could have just masked off the card base to create the ocean background but I’d rather use a separate piece of cardstock in case I mess it up. I also like the additional layer to create more stability for my card.

An ocean scene background is the perfect backdrop to highlight and interesting focal image. Come see how I made my background using a blender brush, inks and the masking technique.

The Bicycle and Towels

  • Cut the bicycle parts using aqua, gray and black cardstock.
  • Assemble the bicycle pieces and attach them together using glossy accents.
  • Cut a strip of bright yellow cardstock about an inch wide and two inches long.
  • Use bright yellow, aqua and bright pink cardstock to cut thin 1/8″ strips of cardstock.
  • Apply glossy accents to the back of the colorful strips and attach them to the yellow layer.
  • Use snips to cut fringe along both ends of the towel.
  • Score the towel and fold in half and cut off a large section of the back of the towel to use in the basket.
  • Apply glossy accents to the back side of the towel, drape over the bike rack and attach.
  • Trim the other towel section to fit in the basket and attach using glossy accents.

Complete the Scene

  • Use green cardstock to cut two Sea Grass sections.
  • Attach the Sea Grass sections to the frame using double stick tape.
  • Apply double stick tape to the back of the front sand layer and attach it to the frame.
  • Apply pieces of mounting tape to the back of the bicycle and attach it to the sand layer and scene base.
  • Finish the scene by cutting three birds, color them with Pumice Stone ink and attach them to the scene using small pieces of mounting tape.

An ocean scene background is the perfect backdrop to highlight and interesting focal image. Click thru to see how I made my background using a blender brush, inks and the masking technique.

Handmade Beach Cards That Will Make You Smell The Sea

It appears I am on a double shutter card kick lately and maybe it’s because I am SO over the winter months, but the idea of handmade beach cards just kept calling out to me to be made! Here’s the one I have today.  I used the Rubbernecker Beach Chairs, Beach Umbrella, Palm Trees, Deckle Hills, Waves, Birds, Tall Bucket, Lifeguard Tower (surfboard), Sun Moon, Boats #1 and Grass #2.

Click through to learn how to make handmade beach cards that will make you think you can smell the sea!

The Card Base

  • The card base was made using a pre scored A2 sized card from  White Double Shutter Card kit.
  • Use your bone folder to sharpen the folds of the card.
  • Cut the designer paper sections  to fit the card base.
    • four 1 15/16″ x 5 3/8″ pieces of blue paper.
    • one 4 1/16″ x 5 3/8″ piece of blue paper.
  • Apply ATG adhesive to the blue layers and attach to the card base.

The Beach and Waves

  • Cut the beach and waves layers using Kraft cardstock and designer paper.
    • eight 1 15/16″ x 1″ beach layers layers.
    • two 4 1/16″ x 1″ beach layers.
    • four 1 15/16″ wave layers.
    • one 4 1/16″ x 1″ wave layer.
  • Apply double stick tape to the beach layers and attach to the flaps and center card section.
  • Use strips of mounting tape to attach the waves layers to the flaps and center card section.

This latest of my handmade beach cards only looks complicated - click through to see how you can start with an easy base and go from there.

Beach Chairs, Umbrella and Palm Trees

  • Use white cardstock to cut the beach chairs, Kraft and green cardstock to cut the palm trees and yellow and blue cardstock to cut the umbrella.
  • Tuck the beach chairs in behind the sand layers and attach with small pieces of mounting tape.
  • Assemble the umbrella sections using glossy accents and attach to the card base using pieces of mounting tape.
  • Attach the palm tree sections together using glossy accents and attach them on both sides of the card base using pieces of mounting tape.

Need some sunshine? Check out today's handmade beach cards, complete with sand and seagulls!

Sun, Birds and Beach Accessories

  • Use yellow cardstock to cut the sun and yellow and blue cardstock to cut the boat, ball and bucket.
  • Assemble the boat, ball and bucket pieces using glossy accents and tuck them in behind the waves and beach layers using mounting tape.  Note:  The ball was made using a 1″ circle punch.
  • Use a piece of mounting tape to attach the sun to the top of the card base.
  • Cut the birds using white cardstock and apply pumice stone ink using a mini applicator.
  • Apply small pieces of mounting tape to the back of the birds and attach to the card base.
  • Finish by tucking small grass sections in behind the beach layers and attaching using glossy accents.

Warm someone's heart by making them think of warming their toes with one of these handmade beach cards!

So whether you LIVE near the ocean, are sending a card to someone on the water or just want to cheer someone up with the promise of sand and sunshine, you can make this beach card or other handmade beach cards like it and send it off to warm someone’s heart!  If you would like more beach card inspiration check out my Beach Card Category or this Pinterest Beach Card page.

Beach Scene with Vintage Woody

My project today is a beach scene with vintage woody card made for Dare To Get Dirty Day 4 of the Splitcoaststampers Dare To Get Dirty week long challenge event. This event is a special thank you to all of the fan club members who support the site all year long. Have you had a desire to be on the Dirty Dozen design team? This special week of challenges will give you tons of opportunity to be inspired and to show off your wonderful and creative projects right along with the current Dirty Dozen team as well as the alumni team members.  Are you a member of the Splitcoaststampers Fan Club? If not go here to check out all the benefits of being a member. If you are a member hop right on over the special challenge forum here.

Come see how I made this beach scene with vintage woody card.

The Beach Scene

  • Cut the scene base using the Nested Deckle Rectangle and white cardstock.
  • Apply an Eclipse tape all the way around the outer border of the base to create a mask.
  • Apply Antique Linen ink to the sand area and Tumbled Glass ink to the water area using a stylus and foam tip.
  • Create the cloud sky area using a cloud stencil and ink blending tool.
  • Sketch in the sea oats using a green marker and then add touches of Vintage Photo ink on the sand at the base of the oats.
  • Use your finger to apply touches of white embossing paste to the water area and the edge of the sand by dabbing gently.
  • Apply clear glitter to the embossing paste while it is still wet.
  • Attach the beach scene layer to the blue layer using mounting tape and attach both to the card base using double stick tape.

Come see how I made this sparkling beach scene with vintage woody card.

The Woody

  • Cut the Woody parts using woodgrain, green, black, white, orange and gray cardstock.
  • Apply Rusty Hinge and Vintage Photo ink to the green card sections using mini applicators to create the appearance of rust and age.
  • Attach the woodgrain section to the car using glossy accents.
  • Apply mounting tape to the fenders and attach them to the car base.
  • Assemble the tire and wheel sections, attach them together using glossy accents and then attach to the car using glossy accents.
  • Attach the orange surfboard to the top of the car using glossy accents.
  • Apply pieces of mounting tape to the back of the Woody and attach it to the scene base.
  • Finish by cutting three flying birds, apply Pumice Stone ink to the wings using a mini applicator and attach them to the sky area using pieces of mounting tape.

Come see how I made this summer beach scene with vintage woody card.

This beach scene with vintage Woody is not quite as detailed with dimensional parts and pieces as I usually make but I liked the simplicity of it.  The sparkly ocean in the background is pretty and the birds in the sky draw the eye up but the Woody is still the main focal point.  It’s fun to add age and rust to the car image so it doesn’t look so perfect.  Have you tried making sea foam on your beach scenes with white embossing paste and glitter.  It’s really very easy and yet the outcome is so pretty.   Thanks for coming by and I hope you have a great day.

Beach Chairs and Umbrella Card

I’m sharing another beach chairs and umbrella card with you today using several of the beach themed dies made by Rubbernecker Stamps.  I used the Beach Chairs #2, Beach Umbrella, Lifeguard Tower, Waves, Deckle Hills, Grass #2 and Sun Moon.  I used the new Cloud Stencil  to create the sky background. The chairs and umbrella are almost too large to use with the lifeguard tower.  I thought placing the chairs on the front of the sand layers and placing the tower in between the layers would put enough separation between them to make the tower appear further out towards the water.  It’s a lot to  accomplish on an A2 sized card but I like how it turned out.

Come check out how I made this beach chairs and umbrella card.

The Cloud Base, Wave and Sand

  • Apply Tumbled Glass ink to the card base using an ink blending tool and cloud stencil
  • Cut the waves using aqua cardstock and the sand using Kraft cardstock.
  • Apply Antique Linen ink to the sand layers using the ink pad direct to paper technique.
  • Attach the two wave layers and back wand layer to the card base using double stick tape.
  • Apply mounting tape to the back of the front sand layer and attach it to the card base.

The Beach Chairs and Umbrella

  • Cut the umbrella twice, once with bright yellow cardstock and once with bright pink cardstock.
  • Apply glossy accents to the back of the yellow sections and attach to the umbrella base.
  • Cut the chair bodies using bright yellow cardstock and the chair slings using bright pink cardstock.
  • Attach the sling sections to the chair bases using glossy accents.

Come check out how I made this colorful beach chairs and umbrella card.

The Lifeguard Tower, Sun and Grass

  • Cut the lifeguard tower using Kraft cardstock and the accessory pieces using bright yellow, red and white cardstock.
  • Apply Antique Linen ink using the direct to paper technique to the lifeguard tower base.
  • Color the roof and fence sections using Vintage Photo ink and a mini applicator.
  • Apply thin strips of mounting tape to the back of the roof and fence and attach to the lifeguard tower base.
  • Assemble the accessories using glossy accents and attach them to the fence railing using glossy accents.  Note:  I used a single strand of string to create the rope for the surfboard.
  • Cut the sun using yellow cardstock , apply Cosmic Shimmer Glue and clear glitter to create sparkle and set aside to dry.
  • Use green cardstock to cut the grass sprigs

Assemble the Scene

  • Apply mounting tape to the back of the beach chairs and umbrella and attach them to the card base.
  • Use mounting tape to attach the lifeguard tower and sun to the card base.
  • Tuck sprigs of grass in between the sand layers and around the chairs and attach using glossy accents.
  • Create small towels to place on the back of each chair using white cardstock, thin strips of bright pink cardstock.
  • Apply glossy accents to the back of each strip and attach to the white towel bases.
  • Use snips to cut the fringe along the bottom of each towel.
  • Fold each towel, hang over the back of each chair and attach using glossy accents.

Come check out how I made this colorful beach chairs and umbrella card.

I had so much fun making this beach chairs and umbrella card.  I hope you aren’t getting tired of beach cards since we still have lots of summer season to go.  I do think there will be some fun Halloween and fall cards coming in the near future.  In the meantime if you want more beach chairs and umbrella card inspiration you can check out this Pinterest page. Oh…..by the way….did you know Rubbernecker Stamps has a new line of stencils?  Thank you for coming by and I hope you have a good day.

Palm Trees and Woody Beach Card

Today I’m sharing another palm trees and Woody beach card using several dies by Rubbernecker Stamps.   I’ve posted several cards using these same dies over the last month or so but I just can’t seem to help myself from making more.  You can click here and here if you would like to more examples using the new beach dies.

Lots of people comment that making layered cards like this would be way too difficult for them.  In reality this kind of card is very easy to make and just requires building layers for the sand and waves and attaching them to the card base.  Beyond that you can tuck any die cut mages you like between the layers to add interest to your scene.  I love how big and bold the palm trees are and how they create a great point of interest on both sides of the card and yet still allows the Woody to be the main focal image. The birds, grass and flowers add additional color and interest to the scene and the big sun draws the eye up and fills space on the right side of the card to balance out the two large trees on the left.  I would love it if you would share links in the comment section below to beach cards you have made recently.  It’s always fun to get inspiration from each other.

For this card I used the Nested Deckle Rectangles, Nested Rectangles, Deckle Hills, Waves, Woody, Palm Trees, Grass #2, Small Birds, Sun Moon, Lifeguard Tower (surfboard)  and Tiny Flower Buds.

Come see how I made this palm trees and woody beach card.

The Frame, Sand, Waves and Cloud Background

  • Use Tumbled Glass ink, a cloud stencil and ink blending tool to create the cloudy sky background to the card base.
  • Cut the frame using white cardstock and the Nested Deckle and Nested Rectangle dies.
  • Use Kraft cardstock and Deckle Hills to cut the sand layers and aqua cardstock to cut the waves layers.
  • Apply Antique Linen ink directly to the sand layers using the direct pad to paper technique.
  • Attach the two waves layers and one sand layer to the card base using double stick tape.
  • Apply double stick tape to the back lower portion of the frame and attach the second sand layer.
  • Apply thin strips of mounting tape around the back side of the frame and attach it to the card base.

Come see how I made this sunny palm trees and woody beach card.

The Palm Trees

  • Cut the palm tree trunks using Kraft cardstock and the palm fronds using green cardstock.
  • Apply Vintage Photo ink to the trunks using a mini applicator.
  • Attach the palm fronds to the trunks using glossy accents.
  • Apply thin strips of mounting tape to the back of the palm trees, tuck them in between the sand layers and attach to the card base.

The Woody

  • Cut the Woody using yellow cardstock and the wood side panel section using woodgrain cardstock.
  • Use gray, yellow and black cardstock to cut the wheels and tires.
  • Cut the trim pieces using gray cardstock.
  • Attach the woodgrain section to the car base using glossy accents.
  • Use rolled up double stick tape to attach the front and back fenders to the car base.
  • Assemble and attach the tire and wheel sections using glossy accents and attach them to the car base using glossy accents.
  • Attach the trim and bumper pieces to the car using glossy accents.
  • Apply mounting tape to the back of the car and attach it to the frame.

The Scene Accessories

  • Cut grass sprigs using green cardstock.
  • Tuck the sprigs in between the sand layers and attach in place using glossy accents.
  • Use yellow cardstock to cut tiny flowers, add a touch of orange to the centers.
  • Place the flowers on the molding pad and form them using the small tipped stylus.
  • Apply glossy accents to the flowers and attach them to the grass sprigs.
  • Cut the birds using white cardstock, apply wing marks using a gray marker and attach them to the sky area using small pieces of mounting tape.
  • Cut the sun using yellow cardstock, apply sparkle using a shimmer pen and attach to the card base using mounting tape.
  • Finish the card by adding a surf board to the top of the Woody and a larger board (cut from the Lifeguard Stand) in between the sand layers.  Note:  I use markers to draw the palm trees and ocean on the surfboard.  The little scene shows up way to dark in the photos but is really prettier in person.

Come see how I made this colorful palm trees and woody beach card.

Okay!  The question …..how many different ways can I make a palm trees and Woody beach card?  The answer……it doesn’t matter to me because I like making them over and over again and just changing up the color combinations, die placements and card layouts makes it fun. I’ve used all of these images on pop up box cards, Z fold cards and regular A2 card layouts.  It gives me lots of pleasure to create them and that is what paper crafting is all about.  How about you?  Do you like making beach cards?  Please feel free to link one or more of your beach cards in the comments below.  I love getting inspiration from others and sharing ideas.

Thanks for coming by today and I hope your are enjoying this holiday weekend.
