How to Make a Shadow Box Greeting Card Fit For the Birds!

Today I wanted to share something a little different from the scene cards I usually make – I took this a step up and want to show you how to make a shadow box greeting card. These incredibly dimensional cards are actually SO EASY to make using a simple shadow box card frame technique I share below. The thing that I think makes this pop are the beautiful layers of the shadow box frame that I was able to easily make using some new dies from Rubbernecker. I just LOVE how I can use one of their dies six kajillion times and it always looks fresh and new and fabulous!

Click through to learn how to make a shadow box greeting card using some basic supplies - these from Rubbernecker!

For this project I used the Rubbernecker Birdhouse, Winter Tree, Small Ivy, Grass Set, Clouds, Leaf Group, Tiny Flower Buds, Birds, Nested Scallop w/ Holes and Nested Rectangle.

The Shadowbox Frame 5.00″ x 3.75″

  • Cut a piece of blue cardstock sized at 7.00″ x 5.75″.
  • Place the cardstock on the Scor-Pal and score all four sides at 1.00″ and .50″.
  • Place the frame on your cutting platform, line up the rectangle frame and run through your die cutting machine to cut the frame opening.
  • Use your scissor to cut the four corners.
  • Fold all the score lines in towards the center and use the bone folder to create a good crease.
  • Apply double stick tape to the top and bottom inside tab edge of the box.
  • Cut a piece of blue cardstock just a tad bit smaller than 5.00″ x 3.75″ to fit inside the box and use as the scene base.
  • Secure the scene base to the top and bottom tabs inside the box.
  • Finish closing the box by attaching double stick tape to the side tabs, fold in and attach to the back side of the scene base.
  • Apply double stick tape all the way around the back of the box and secure it to the folded card base.

The Shadow Box, White Frame and Grass Layers

  • Cut the scalloped frame using white cardstock and attach to the frame using double stick tape.  Note:  The white frame is a touch wider than the frame so it extends out a tiny bit but I love how it looks.
  • Cut 1 grass layer 4.00″ wide and 3 grass layers 3.75″ wide.
  • Attach 1 layer of mounting tape on the back of the back grass layer and attach to the base.
  • Apply three layers of mounting tape to the second layer of grass and attach to the base.
  • Attach five layers of mounting tape to the third layer of grass and attach to the base.
  • Apply a single layer of mounting tape to the front grass layer and attach to the front of the box.

The Birdhouse and Birds

  • Cut the birdhouse sections using woodgrain and red cardstock.
  • Apply Vintage Photo ink to the birdhouse and post using a mini applicator.
  • Use a strip of rolled up 1/4″ double stick tape to attach the red roof and base to the birdhouse

double stick tape 2

  • Apply  pieces of mounting tape to the back of the post and birdhouse, tuck them in behind the last grass layer and attach to the card base.
  • Cut a section of the leaf group using green cardstock, cut one branch section off and attach it to the front of the birdhouse using glossy accents.
  • Use red cardstock to cut several birds.  Color their beaks using a black marker.
  • Attach one bird to the front of the birdhouse using a small piece of mounting tape.

The Tree, Clouds, Birds and Flower Branches

  • Use woodgrain cardstock to cut the tree and color it using Antique Linen ink. Note:  I only cut a small section of the tree to use in the corner of the frame.
  • Cut Small Ivy leaves using green cardstock and attach them to the branches using glossy accents.
  • Apply glossy accents to the upper edges of the tree branches and attach it the inside of the frame.
  • Use white cardstock to cut the clouds and attach them to the scene base using pieces of mounting tape.
  • Cut the tiny flowers using red and white cardstock, form them with a small tipped stylus and molding pad and attach them to the leaf branches using glossy accents.
  • Tuck the flower branches in behind the grass layers and attach using glossy accents.
  • Attach the additional birds to the scene using small pieces of mounting tape for the finishing touch.

Bird House Scene Card

I have a pretty soft blue bird house scene card to share with you today using dies from Rubbernecker Stamps. I love playing in the Splitcoaststampers daily challenges and this card was made for this week’s Sketch Challenge.  You can check out the sketch layout below.  I love using the Nested Rectangle Scallop  layer to create a background for my scene.  I thought the Nested Tag shape added interest to the layout.  I cut the Tree Panel apart and used one section for the tree.  I cut smaller pieces to use as stems for the Flowers to border the Picket Fence and Grass.  I placed a Bird House in my scene so I could use Birds for the three embellishments.

Come see my pretty bird house scene card using Rubbernecker dies.

Sketch

The Tree and Flowers

I cut the tree panel twice.  I trimmed around the leaves that are attached in the frame so all the limbs and leaves can be used.  I kept the left section of the panel whole to use  as a small tree in the scene and colored the trunk and branches with a brown Copic marker.  I cut apart the rest of the panel into smaller stems to use with the flowers.  I formed the flowers with my stylus and molding pad and attached them to the tree branches and flower stems using glossy accents.

The Bird House, Fence and Grass

I cut the fence and bird house using Kraft cardstock. I cut the tiny roof in blue as an accent and attached it to the bird house using thin strips of mounting tape.  I cut a small scrap piece of Kraft cardstock to cover the hole and attached it to the back of the bird house with mounting tape.  I attached the post to the back of the bird house with a couple glue dots.  I cut the grass and attached it to the fence using double stick tape.

Come see my summer bird house scene card using Rubbernecker dies.

Assembling the Bird House Scene Card

The large scalloped layer was attached to the card base using double stick tape.  I popped the tag up on the scalloped layer with mounting tape and then attached the grass and fence directly to the tag with double stick tape.  I applied a small piece of mounting tape to the right side of the grass layer to hold it in place since it was longer than the fence and tag.

I tucked the bird house in behind the fence and attached it with mounting tape.  The flower stems were tucked in behind the grass section and attached with glossy accents.  I finished the scene by attaching the birds to the bird house, a branch of the tree and to the right side of the card using tiny pieces of mounting tape.

Come see my soft colored bird house scene card using Rubbernecker dies.

I love how soft and pretty this bird house scene card is with the blue and white.  The birds and flowers almost look like porcelain.  I appreciate you coming by and I hope you have a great day.

Framed Die Cut Bird House Scene

I had lots of fun making this framed die cut bird house scene card using several of the new Rubbernecker May release dies.  I really like the three different sizes and shapes of the houses in the set.  The larger house works great to create as a the main focal point on a card front.  The smaller ones work perfectly in scenes with lots of other images surrounding it.  I have made lots of bird house projects over the years and thought I would list a link here for you.

Come check out how I made this framed die cut bird house scene card.

The Frame and Tree Panel

I cut the tree panel and cut it apart to fit in the frames.  I attached the tree sections to the back of the frame using double stick tape and then applied thin strips of mounting tape to the back of the frame and attached it to the white scene base.

Assembling the Bird Houses

I cut the bird houses out using woodgrain and red cardstock.  I assembled the pieces together using double stick tape and small pieces of mounting tape.

Come see how I made this framed die cut bird house scene card perfect for bird lovers..

The Flowers and Birds

I formed the tiny flowers using the smallest stylus tip that I own along with my molding pad.  I cut the birds and added touches of black on the beak of each bird using a black Copic marker.

Completing the Frame Die Cut Bird Scene

The bird houses were attached to the card base using mounting tape.  I added tiny pieces of foliage to the roof tops and openings using glossy accents and embellished with tiny flowers.  I used glossy accents to attach tiny flowers all around the tree panels and finished the scene by attaching several birds to the scene using small pieces of mounting tape.

Come see how I made this framed die cut bird house scene card.

I sure do appreciate you coming by and I hope you are having a good week.  I hope you are inspired to get out your dies to create your own framed die cut bird house scene card.

Die Cut Bird House Scene

I have a pretty and bright die cut bird house scene to share with you today using lots of the newly released Rubbernecker Stamps dies.  It love combining the tree, clouds, fence and garden images with the birds and bird house to create this image packed scene.  All the die cut images are listed below.

I love creating a die cut bird house scene card with garden images and a tree and cloud background.

Framing the Scene

I started by attaching the grass and fence sections to the back of the frame using double stick tape.  Next I colored the green tree layer using a brown Copic marker.  I attached mounting tape to the back of the frame, attached the tree panel to it, added double stick tape and attached the completed frame to the blue card base.

Coloring the Bucket and Watering Can

I cut the bucket and watering can using gray cardstock and colored them using Wild Honey, Rusty Hinge and Vintage Photo ink and mini applicators.

I love creating a die cut bird house scene card with garden and fence images.

Bird House and Flower Arrangements

I assembled the bird house pieces using small strips of mounting tape and attached it to the card base using mounting tape.  I cut and formed all the tiny flowers using my stylus and molding pad.  I cut foliage and attached the small pierces to the to the back of the bucket and watering can using glossy accents.  I finished the arrangements by attaching flowers to the foliage using glossy accents.  I added tiny flowers to the tree branches and attached with glossy accents.

I love creating a die cut bird house scene card with garden images.

Completing the Die Cut Bird House Scene

I attached the bucket and watering can to the scene using pieces of mounting tape.  I attached flowers, foliage and birds to the bird house using glossy accents. I attached clouds in behind the tree branches using mounting tape.  I added a few more birds to the scene using mounting tape for the finishing touch.

Birdhouse, Birds and Flowers Scene

Good Wednesday morning.  Today I have birdhouse, birds and flowers scene card to share with you using the Rubbernecker 5142-05D Birds Die, 5114D Mini Flower Stack, 5122D Rectangle Stitch OPC Die, 5126D Tree Panel #1 Die, 5030 Nested Oval Scallop Die and 5131 Square Combo #1 OPC Die.  You can find all of these dies included in the sale going on over at Rubbernecker. Click on the ad below for more information about the sale.

A birdhouse, birds and flowers make such a pretty card front scene.

The Tree, Grass and Frame

I cut the tree panel out using white cardstock and colored it with brown and green Copic markers.  The scalloped oval section was cut in half and trimmed down to fit in behind the frame.  I attached the two frame sections together on the back using double stick tape and attached the scalloped grass sections.  I applied thin strips of mounting tape to the back of the frame, trimmed the tree panel to fit and attached it to the mounting tape.  I applied double stick tape to the back of the tree panel and frame and attached it to the blue card base.

A birdhouse, birds and flowers make such a lovely card front scene.

Birdhouse, Birds and Flowers

I hand cut the tiny birdhouse using brown wood grain cardstock and punched a 1/8″ circle in it to create the birdhouse opening. I punched a 1/8″ circle in a piece of scrap cardstock, trimmed around the circle with my deckle scissors to create the white frame for the opening and attached it with glossy accents. I cut a corner section and straight section of scalloped frame border and attached them to the birdhouse using mounting tape.  Check out my Die Cut Birdhouse Video to see how I used parts and pieces of frame dies to create the birdhouse.

I attached the birdhouse to the card base with a piece of mounting tape.  I cut another tree panel in green and cut the branches apart to use as flower stems.  I used my small tipped stylus and molding pad to form the tiny flowers and then I attached them to the branches using glossy accents.  I tucked the flower branches in behind the scalloped grass borders and attached with glossy accents.

The birds were attached to the scene using pieces of mounting tape.  I finished by attaching one tiny flower and a couple small branches to the birdhouse using glossy accents.  I love how the red flowers and red birds pop against the blue background, white frame and green grass.A birdhouse, birds and flowers make such a nature filled card front scene
