Clean and Simple Card with Cats

A clean and simple card with a fairly simple pattern or image can be the perfect background for almost any subject or occasion. When I saw this background, Wrapped String, I instantly thought of Cats playing with a ball of string or yarn.  The simple pattern creates interest while allowing the cats and sentiment to be front and center.  I used the Inside Scallop Nested for the background layer and the sentiment is from the Kittie Says Phrases #1

The Sentiment and Cats

  • Cut black and white strips of cardstock.
  • Use the Inside Scallop die to cut the black and white strips to create matching decorative borders to line up over the background layer.
  • Stamp the sentiment using Nocturne ink, sprinkle with super fine clear embossing powder and heat emboss.
  • Attach the black and white layers together using ATG adhesive.
  • Apply strips of mounting tape to the back of the sentiment layer and attach it to stamped layer.

Create a Scene with Die Cuts

Today my project is a cheerful spring card and is a perfect example of how to create a scene with die cuts.  My main goal when using die cuts on a card is to create dimension, balance and interest.  It is important to create balance within the scene so there is something of interest from top to bottom.

Take a look at my card and you see the chair, grass, flowers and cat on the bottom.  The tree, cat on the branch and sun creates equal balance to offset how heavy the image base is on the bottom portion of the scene.  The balance from top to bottom is far more pleasing to the eye.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve created a scene that didn’t look quite right to my eye and was then easily fixed by adding an additional element- a flying bird in the sky area- an animal playing in the grass- sun and clouds in the sky.

For this project I used the Rubbernecker Inside Scallop Nested Dies, Winter Tree, Spring Leaves, Beach Chairs, Grass, Grass #2, Berries Branches, Small Flowers #1, Cats and Mixable Flower Stack 5107.

Click through to come over and see how fun and easy it is to create a scene with die cuts on a card front with lots of dimension.

The Card and Scene Base

  • Cut the rectangle and card base using white cardstock.
  • Apply masking tape around the outer edge of the rectangle layer to create a frame.
  • Use a blender brush to apply Tumbled Glass ink to create a pretty blue sky background.
  • Remove the masking tape and attach the rectangle to the card base using strips of mounting tape.
  • Cut two grass strips about 1.25″ high using green cardstock.
  • Line up the rectangle die on the bottom of each grass strip and run through the machine.  This step allows the bottom and sides of the grass strips to perfectly match the scene base.
  • Attach the back layer of grass to the card base using ATG adhesive and the front layer using strips of mounting tape.

The Tree

  • Use Kraft cardstock to cut the tree and green cardstock to cut three sections of the leaves.
  • Apply Antique Linen ink to the tree using the direct to paper technique.  Note:  Push down lightly on the tree with the ink pad and swipe over it to apply the ink.
  • Place the leaves face up on the mold pad and form them by push down in the middle of the leaf using the leaf tool. Note:  The leaf tool has a curled metal tip that can be used to create score lines or to form leaves.
  • Use reverse tweezers to pick up the leaves and attach them to the tree branches using glossy accents.
  •  You can find leaf tool and reverse tweezers wonderful tool in the Paper Sculpting Kit by Sizzix

The Flower Branches

  • Cut two of the berry branches using green cardstock.
  • Use pink, purple and yellow cardstock to cut the small flowers.
  • Place the flowers face up on the molding pad and push down in the flower centers using a small tipped stylus.
  • Attach the flowers to the berry branches using glossy accents.

The Chair, Cats and Sun

  • Cut the beach chair and cats using white cardstock.
  • Use the largest flower in the Mixable Flower Stack and yellow cardstock to cut out the sun.
  • Color the cats using a black Copic marker. Note: I like to use black and white cats because they usually stand out far better against dark colors like the grass and leaves.

Assemble The Scene

  • Tuck the tree trunk in behind the grass layers and attach to the card base using thin strips of mounting tape and a few rolled up glue dots behind a few key leaf sections.
  • Apply mounting tape to the back of the chair, tuck it in behind the grass section and attach to the tree and card base.
  • Trim off the bottom section of each of the flower branches, tuck them in behind the grass and attach them to the card base using glossy accents.
  • Cut a couple Grass #2 sections and tuck them in behind the grass around the chair and flower branches to soften the grass border.
  • Apply a large piece of mounting tape to the back of the sun and attach it to the top corner of the card base.
  • Apply pieces of mounting tape to the back of the cats and attach them in the scene.
  • Notice how the position of the cats draw the eye up from the bottom cat in the grass to the middle cat climbing up from the chair and on up to the cat in the tree.  I also used the “rule of odds” which suggests that an odd number of subjects in an image is more interesting than an even number.

How to create a scene with die cuts.

Die Cut Arbor and Gate Scene

Good Sunday morning.  I have a pretty die cut arbor and gate scene to share with you today.  This is a sneak peek of the new Rubbernecker Stamps Gate and Arbor die set.  I paired the arbor set with a branch from the Tree Panel #2, Cats, Small Ivy, Small Butterflies and Tiny Flower Buds.  I framed the scene using the Nested Rectangle Scallop w/ Holes  and Nested Rectangles.

Come check out how I made this die cut arbor and gate scene card.

The Frame and Grass

  • Cut the nested scalloped layer using white cardstock.
  • Place the scalloped layer on the magnetic platform, secure the nested rectangle die in place on the paper and run through the machine to cut the frame opening.
  • Cut a grass section and tree panel using green cardstock.
  • Apply double stick tape to the bottom and top backside of the frame and attach the grass section at the bottom and a trimmed branch at the top.
  • Apply thin strips of mounting tape to the frame.
  • Cut a blue rectangle layer for the background of the scene and attach it to the back of the frame.
  • Apply double stick tape to the back of the frame layer and attach it ti the card base.

Comae check out how I made this spring die cut arbor and gate scene card.

The Gate and Arbor

  • Cut the arbor and two gate sections using white cardstock.
  • Cut the hinges and handle using black cardstock.
  • Attach the hinges to the gate and arbor sections using glossy accents.
  • Attach the handle using glossy accents.
  • Cut two slat sections off the second gate for each side of the arbor and attach them using glossy accents.
  • Apply thin strips of mounting tape to the back of the arbor and gate sections and tuck it in behind the grass and attach.

The Ivy, Flowers, Butterflies and Cats

  • Cut two sections of the ivy using green cardstock.
  • Cut two sections of tiny flower buds and a section of butterflies using pink cardstock and form them using a tiny tipped stylus and molding pad.
  • Cut the cats using white cardstock and apply the black markings using a Copic marker.
  • Attach the ivy sections to the arbor and to both sides of the arbor gate using glossy accents.
  • Attach the flowers to the ivy using glossy accents.
  • Apply pieces of mounting tape to the back of the cats and attach them in the scene.
  • Finish the scene by attaching butterflies using glossy accents.

Come check out how I made this pretty die cut arbor and gate scene card.

I had so much fun creating this pretty die cut arbor and gate scene with the cats and butterflies.  I think the cats looks like they’re moving in the scene.  One is jumping up to walk along the top of the fence and one is chasing a bug of some kind.  I liked making the cats black and white to match the gate and handles.  Thanks so much for coming by and I hope you have a great Sunday.

Die Cut Scene with Cats

My project today is a fun out of the box die cut scene with cats framed with a large grouping of circles. The scene was made using Rubbernecker 5117D Bubbles Die, 5142-09 Cats, 5140-01D Upper Case Alpha w/ Stitch, 5140-02D Lower Case Alpha w/ Stitch and 5100-14D Heart Outline Stitch.

Die cut scene with cats.

Coloring the Die Cut Cats

I cut out the cats die a couple of times using white cardstock.  I knew I may need to duplicate one or two of the cats for m scene and also that I may mess one or two of them up.  I created several different color cats mainly using distress inks and mini applicators. I created the all black  and black and white cats using a black Copic marker.

Creating the Die Cut Scene Layout

The bubbles die is quite large so I created a 6″ x 6″ card base.  I laid the bubbles in the center of the card base to get an idea of how much space I needed between the gingham layers.  The gingham layers are each 1.50″ deep and leave a space of 3″ for the bubbles frame.  The gingham layers were attached to the card base using strips of mounting tape.  The bubbles frame was attached using a combination of tiny pieces of mounting tape and rolled glue dots.

A die cut scene with cats makes a great card for children.

Completing the Die Cut Scene

All the cats, heart and alphabet pieces were attached to the care base and gingham layers using pieces of mounting tape.  I thought the bubbles and cats looked a little pale against the all white background so I added a few red negative dots back into the frame and attached them with pieces of mounting tape.

A die cut scene with cats makes a great card for children.

For those of you who have cats you know they can walk around on almost anything in the house so walking around on the bubble frame really isn’t too far fetched.  LOL!  I hope you have enjoyed my crazy card and have been inspired to think out of the box to create your own die cut scene with cats.
