Good Tuesday morning. My project today was made for the Splitcoaststampers Technique Lovers Challenge to make our own stencil. I used the negative of the largest tree from the Impression Obsession Fir Trees set and sponged in the background trees in the distance. Here’s what I came up with.
I cut the tree out of a piece of scrap cardstock and used the negative opening as a stencil to sponge in the trees in the background of the scene. I sponged the sky area with blue. I cut several trees using olive cardstock and sponged then lightly with green ink to make them march the background trees. I cut the deer using kraft cardstock and sponged them lightly with brown.
I created a matted frame and attached over the sponged tree background scene with mounting tape. I attached the back row of die cut trees in the scene with mounting tape. I attached the left and right trees on the front row with double layers of masking tape. I attached the deer to the trees with mounting tape and finished by adding the middle tree with triple layers of masking tape. I know it sounds like lots of layers but I love the dimension it creates. Here is a closer view from the side to show the depth of the scene. You can click on the photos for an even closer view.
I used a tiny brush and applied tiny dots of pure white watercolor paint to create the falling show. I love how this turned out. It simple and such a perfect card for a guy.
Here is a very similar card I made back in the summer using the negative of a tree die. You can see step by step pictures of the steps I used to make the background.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a great day.

I’ll drink to what Karen said, Queen of Scenes. My dh and I are currently drooling – we both love the forest and deer.
This brilliant creation beggars description–just simply stunningly beautiful, Kittie!!
Two wonderful cards, Kittie! Great snowy trees and deer on the green card. Lovely trees in blue w/a female reindeer with her touch of pink, tiny flower on her neck. Such a cool detail! 🙂
Great job! These two cards are so beautiful!

Kittie, I love how you use the negative of the trees as your stencil…making use of all that we have is key and you are guiding the way…beautiful! And, yes, I am happy that I finally bought the fir trees.
